The mother of modern-day ecology would have turned 100 this year had she not died back in 1964.
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the May 29, 1907, birth of Rachel Carson, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Friends of the National Conservation Training Center are launching an online book club.
Linda Lear, an author and Carson biographer, will kick-off the first session Thursday. The online club will run through November.
Among the books to be showcased is "Silent Spring," Carson's best-known book. It alerted the public to the dangers of pesticides, including DDT, and raised questions about mankind's impact on nature.
