MCI Executive convicted of wire fraud to speak at Cal State San Bernardino
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Walt Pavlo knew the ins and outs of MCI as a senior executive. It was his abuse of that knowledge that led to his learning about the insides of a federal prison after being convicted of wire fraud and money laundering.
Pavlo will talk about his experiences on Thursday, Jan. 31, at Cal State San Bernardino’s College of Business and Public Administration’s 2008 Business Alliance Executive Briefings series. The series features executives from a variety of industries, including banking, journalism, medical technology, public relations and entrepreneurship.
A former mid-level MCI Communications executive, Pavlo pleaded guilty to embezzling $6 million from his employer and served two years in federal prison. The cautionary tale about his slide from respected manager to convicted felon has been featured in Forbes, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and USA Today, and on National Public Radio and ABC’s Nightline.
Pavlo now uses his experiences as a nationally recognized speaker on white-collar crime. His audiences have included the FBI, Fortune 500 corporations, leading accounting and law firms and professional societies.
He also teamed up with Forbes Senior Editor Neil Weinberg to co-write “Stolen Without A Gun: Confessions from inside history’s biggest accounting fraud – the collapse of MCI WorldCom,” an in-depth account of his former life of crime. Pavlo is also founder and president of Etika, LLC.
Each of the briefings will be from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the university’s John M. Pfau Library at the 4th Floor, Room 4005. The cost of Pavlo’s briefing is $40 and includes a continental breakfast. A discounted price of $10 per briefing is available for Business Alliance members, CSUSB faculty, staff, alumni and students.
