Egyptian art exhibit coming to Cal State San Bernardino museum Nov. 22

5:30 PM Sat, Sep 20, 2008 |
Posted by: Melanie Ladonga

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Uncovering the mysteries of ancient Egypt is not just an epic tale. It's the real life experience of legendary archaeologists.

William Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) is among the greatest. Known as the father of modern archaeology, he combed the tombs, temples and villages of Egypt for more than five decades.

For the first time in history, a portion of his extraordinary findings have come to the United States in "Excavating Egypt: Great Discoveries from the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology." So far, the exhibit has traveled to such venues as the Michael C. Carlos Museum, Emory University, the New Mexico Museum of Art and Lowe Art Museum, University of Miami.

The Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum at Cal State San Bernardino will host the Petrie collection starting Nov. 22. As the only venue on the West Coast for the exhibit, the show is also the Fullerton Art Museum's first international exhibition ever.

Running through Feb. 15, 2009, the exhibit will feature more than 220 objects portraying the daily life and burial of the ancient Egyptians. The world's earliest surviving dress (cir. 2800 B.C.), jewelry, mummy masks and royal art from King Akhenaten's palace city of Amarna are among the treasures included in the exhibit.

A reception for the exhibit will be held Nov. 22 in the museum from 5-7 p.m.

The Petrie Museum, at University College London, houses the most extensive collection of Egyptian artifacts in the world, outside of Egypt itself. With more than 80,000 objects, Petrie, the museum's namesake, excavated a large part of the collection himself, initiating the major archaeological movement at the turn of the 20th century.

"Excavating Egypt" is the first major exhibit to arrive at the Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum since its accreditation in March 2008. Of the more than 17,500 museums in the United States, the American Association of Museums has accredited only 4 percent.

The RVF Art Museum continues to offer the Inland Empire and its surrounding regions world-class art and culture. After showing at the RVF, "Excavating Egypt" travels to The University of Kentucky Art Museum and then back home to England.

The Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum is home to the largest display of ancient Egyptian antiquities west of the Mississippi River. Established in 1996, the RVF Art Museum has accumulated a collection of nearly 1,200 objects focusing on Egyptian antiquities, ceramics and contemporary art.

Admission for exhibits at the Fullerton Art Museum is free. Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., closed Sunday and Monday. Parking is $5 per vehicle. Phone: (909) 537-7373.

The Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum will be dark through Sept. 24. It reopens Oct. 4 with original photographs by Andy Warhol, and two accompanying exhibits, "DIVAS: A Group Exhibition of Immodest Photography" and the artwork of new CSUSB faculty member Beth Steffel.

For more information on Cal State San Bernardino, contact the university's Office of Public Affairs at (909) 537-5007 and visit http://news.csusb.edu.

Happy Trails Breakfast Club fundraiser set Sept. 13

Posted by: Melanie Ladonga

Apple Valley, CA. The Happy Trails Children's Foundation has announced the Happy Trails Breakfast Club, a special fund raising event to benefit the abused children served by the foundation. This special event will commemorate the lives and careers of legendary cowboy stars Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, the King of the Cowboys and Queen of the West.

The Breakfast Club will provide an opportunity for Roy and Dale's fans, Western film fans, and especially fans of old B-Westerns to come together in an informal way to enjoy a breakfast buffet, meet a special celebrity guest, enjoy live music in the tradition of the Sons of the Pioneers, and see a Roy Rogers double feature on the big screen. There will be a live auction of collectibles and memorabilia, a question and answer session, and much more. This is a great opportunity to turn back the clock to those thrilling days of our youth when we sat in a dark theater and watched Roy and Trigger bring truth, justice, music, romance, comedy and action to the Wild West as they galloped across the silver screen. This was entertainment for the entire family at its very best!

Our special celebrity guest will be stuntman/character actor Neil Summers. Neil has appeared in countless movies and TV Shows for more than 40 years, including 5 movies with John Wayne. Outspoken, opinionated and direct, Neil has been one of our most popular celebrity guests at the Roy Rogers Film Festival. He has been blown up, shot, knifed, struck by a rattlesnake, beat up, fallen down stairs, off balconies, and off more horses than he can count, all for the camera. Neil is still active in Hollywood and he has many exciting and fun stories to share with us.

Musical guests will be the Tumbling Tumbleweeds, a group of young men who were a big hit at the inaugural edition of the Breakfast Club this past February. There will be other special guests present including Dale Park as Gabby.

The Happy Trails Breakfast Club will be held 9 a.m. Saturday, September 13, at the Ambassador Hotel in Victorville, located at the Palmdale Road exit on I-15. The cost is $29 per person with a 10% discount for Happy Trails Trailblazer Club members. You do not have to be a member of the Trailblazer Club or any other organization to attend. All are welcome. Reservations are required so that the cooks will know how much breakfast to make. We invite you to come in costume, western or casual dress. For reservations, tickets, or more information, please call the Happy Trails Children's Foundation, (760) 240-3330. If you do not get an answer, please leave your name, phone number and a brief message and your call will be returned. We accept American Express, Discover, MasterCard and VISA. The Ambassador Hotel is offering a special room rate for Breakfast Club guests. For reservations, please call (760) 245-6565.

Salvation Army to build apartments for homeless

5:46 PM Thu, Sep 04, 2008 |
Posted by: Melanie Ladonga

(SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.) - The Salvation Army of San Bernardino will build eight new apartments for families transitioning out of homelessness, thanks to a one million dollar forgivable loan just approved by the state.

"This is amazing news for our community," said Captain Steve Ball, San Bernardino corps officer. "We've been dreaming of this day so we can help more people move off San Bernardino streets and transition into brand new lives."

The apartments will offer a stable, transitional home where eight families( as many as 36 individuals) can stay for up to two years, receive counseling, find jobs and save money for permanent housing.

The major of the city of San Bernardino agrees it is good news. Although the city hasn't yet formally approved the plans, it is helping The Salvation Army get through the approval process.

"The Salvation Army's plans for the homeless are very, very needed," said Kent Paxton, director of Operation Phoenix, and leader in the city's effort to assist The Salvation Army through the approval process. "A recent survey showed that San Bernardino has more homeless people than any city in the county," Paxton added.

"The San Bernardino City Unified School District counted 1,700 homeless children in the district," he said. "Those children belong to families, some of whom will benefit greatly from these apartments."

The California Department of Housing & Community Development awarded The Salvation Army a $1 million loan on July 16. This loan won't have to be repaid if The Salvation Army completes construction of the shelter and fulfills the program requirements over a 10-year compliance period, said Adriana Mattox, a funding consultant with Hill & Associates, a firm that helped The Salvation Army obtain funds.

Sheltering up to 96 homeless people every night is just one of the many ministries The Salvation Army of San Bernardino currently offers. Others include serving dinners six nights a week to up to 200 people, helping emergency workers in disasters, providing spiritual counseling and training, operating youth mentoring programs, and working to improve the lives of homeless people within the community.

"None of the money we are about to receive can be used for these other programs," Capt. Ball said. "While the money for our apartment project is wonderfully received by The Salvation Army, it's important to understand that the many other programs we operate need continued support."

The Salvation Army will build the new transitional apartments on the same property where it will soon relocate its emergency shelter. It is still working out the design of this shelter, but Capt. Ball expects it to house 60 to 80 people, with room for an additional 40 more during cold weather months.

It plans to also remodel some of the new shelter's rooms for single women and families with children.

Adult Rehabilitation Center, a separate branch of The Salvation Army, currently operates the Tenth Street shelter as a residence for men in recovery from addictions. The Salvation Army of San Bernardino operates a shelter at 746 W. Fifth Street, primarily serving homeless women and children, but also married couples.

In October of 2008, Adult Rehabilitation Services will move its men's residence to a new building on Doolittle Street, and the Salvation Army of San Bernardino intends to move its services to Tenth Street.

The Salvation Army San Bernardino Citadel Corps has helped residents of San Bernardino, Rialto, Grand Terrace, Highland, Bloomington and Colton since 1887.

The homeless shelter and meals program is at 746 W. Fifth St. in San Bernardino. For more information, call (909) 888-1336.

A free children's film festival will be held every Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. and repeated at 2:00 p.m. (unless otherwise noted) in the Children's Room of the Norman F. Feldheym Central Library.

The September films are as follows:

September 6: An eleven-year-old girl lives an adventurous life on an island with her father and assorted animal friends. Through e-mail, she becomes friends with a lady writer who is timid, and they both learn to use each other's strengths to save the island when Nim's father becomes lost at sea.

September 13: Ben Stiller stars as a museum guard who soon discovers that all the exhibits come to life after the sun sets. He must find a way to control the chaos and keep the exhibits from leaving the museum.

September 20: A hot shot racing car zooms along Route 66 and crashes into the town of Radiator Springs. As part of his sentence he must work on road repairs and in doing so he learns how to be friends with other cars and trucks.

September 27: Long ago music was outlawed in the kingdom of Atlantica. It takes the bravery and the charm of Ariel the princess mermaid to bring music back to the undersea world.

Note: the San Bernardino Public Library has purchased the performance rights to well-known popular films. As part of the agreement, we cannot announce the title of the film in news releases.

Substitution may occur. For more information, please call 909.381.8235.
