RIALTO (Aug. 14, 2007) -- Former NFL athletes will run a day camp for area youth on Saturday in memory of former NFL running back David Lang, a graduate of Eisenhower High School.
Legends by Lang, a nonprofit sports educational foundation, is sponsoring the appearances of former NFL players at Wilmer Amina Carter High School to coach more than 200 boys, ages 8 to 17, in speed and football drills from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Coaches and motivational speakers will include Roman Phifer, former three time Super Bowl champ, Chris Hayes, retired from the Green Bay Packers, and Ron Brown, formerly with the Los Angeles Rams and Oakland Raiders.
Local and elected officials will be attending the event mid-day including District 62 Assembly Member Wilmer Amina Carter (D-Rialto), whose keynote speech will emphasize the connection between education and sports. "The discipline that these boys learn in sports will translate into every aspect of their lives, whether it be education, family life or being a productive citizen in their community," Carter said.
Lang's brother, Fletcher, a Carter High School security guard, helped organize the event which supports the mission of his brother's foundation: youth mentoring. Lang, 36, a running back with the Rams and Dallas Cowboys, was fatally shot on May 20, 2005 in an apparent argument with a 19-year-old acquaintance.
"By doing this football day camp, we want to remind kids that there's hope and a way to overcome any obstacles that may be occurring," Fletcher Lang said. "Our main focus is education, and that is needed for young people to reach their goals and accomplish their dreams."
The $30 registration fee for the 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. event covers expenses and includes lunch. The foundation is making a donation to the Carter High School football team booster club, Carter High School Principal Veronica Smith-Izsard.
"We're always appreciative when professional athletes come to our school which is building our own strong athletic department, said Syeda Jafri, spokesperson for Rialto Independent School District.
