Clement Middle School Race Team to receive bicycle donations

It started as an after-school running club six years ago, but the Clement Middle School Race Team has grown into much more than an athletic outlet.

The team, founded three years ago, focuses on academics and leadership skills and gives many students a chance to excel.

"The year long program gives teammates the opportunity to compete in cross-country meets, community races, and participate in charity events," says coach Colleen Slick.

And with the support of the officers, civilian personnel and volunteers of the Redlands Police Department, the team now has a chance to grow even more.

On Tuesday, RPD personnel and volunteers, along with community activists from several northside groups and civic leaders will be on hand to present the club with 10 brand new 10-speed bicycles.

Redlands Police Officer Michelle Maranan, currently assigned as the Clement School Resource Officer, has become very involved with the team, which is instructed by Clement teachers Tim Rochester and Slick.

Maranan says the club and the bicycle donations give children an opportunity to better themselves by building self-confidence, physical and mental health, leadership skills and team work.

“The demographic makeup of Clement’s students are lower income and usually from single-parent homes or extended families who may not be able to afford extracurricular activities for their students,” says Maranan. “The donation of these bikes will help the Race Team include many of the students who already feel different from their classmates who have financial support at home.”

Besides the physical benefits for a generation of children who are increasingly sedentary and overweight, Maranan says the team helps many of the youth stay focused on positive activities that keep them out of trouble.

Slick and Rochester have kept the team going in the three years since its inception with their dedication and, many times, out-of-pocket support.

Last year the Redlands Police Officers Association and the East Valley Second Chance, sponsored an at-risk student to participate on the team.

In June, Rudy Lozano, a member of the Redlands Police Department Citizen Volunteer Patrol, and retired RPD Sgt. Carlos Pimentel, secured the donation of 10 brand new 10-speed bikes as well as monetary donations and new helmets.

The donations will allow the team to branch out from running alone to participate in triathlons, the Redlands Bicycle Classic and the Rotary Ride through Palm Springs, as well as other events.

The presentation will take place at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Clement Middle School, 501 E. Pennsylvania Ave.

In addition to Redlands Police officers and volunteers, members of the Northside Advisory Committee, Northside Impact Committee, North Redlands Visioning Committee, Lugonia Community Association and City Council member Gilberto Gil will be on hand.

Members of the press are invited and encouraged to attend Tuesday’s event.

For information on the Clement Middle School Race Team, contact Officer Michelle Maranan at (909) 307-5400.

The Rotary Club of Redlands names new president

REDLANDS, CA – During the coming year, Ken Stein will be juggling more than Circus classes, health and fitness programs, and overall operations as the Redlands YMCA’s General Director. Stein will be adding the presidency of the Rotary Club of Redlands to his time-balancing act.

Stein took over the role as Rotary Club President in July, following Don McCue who served as president for the past year. Also serving on the board of directors for the coming year are: President-Elect Neal Waner; Secretary Ralph Feller; Treasurer Steve Guggisberg; and Directors Jens Peter Brandt, Don McCue, Allan Griesemer, Doug Pew, Jr., Bill Hatfield, Kathy Johnson, and Pam Huston.

In preparation for becoming president of the club, Stein attended the Rotary International Convention in Salt Lake City in June 2007, where he heard addresses from Bill Gates, Sr. and Stephen Covey, among other notables. "It was an incredible experience participating in the largest convention ever held in Salt Lake City with 16,000 Rotarians from around the world," said Stein. Incoming Rotary presidents also participate in President- Elect training which consists of two separate weekend events to prepare them for the job of leading their Rotary clubs.

Stein has been a Rotarian for 14 years, 10 of which have been with the Rotary Club of Redlands and four years as a Rotarian in Oakland, California. He served two terms as a board member before being elected president in Redlands.

Enthused about leading the Rotary Club, Stein outlined his goals for the coming year as: increase the club’s membership by 10 members; renew an international focus; increase support for the Rotary International Foundation; improve the club’s business systems; complete a major community project; expand the emphasis on literacy; raise money for community support and youth scholarships; and for Rotarians to have fun together. Stein joined the YMCA staff in Redlands as General Director in July 1997. He is a career YMCA professional, with 35 years of YMCA experience. Prior to coming to Redlands, he was Vice-President of Finance for the YMCA of the East Bay in Oakland, California . He has also served in roles as Vice President of Development, as the General Director of the YMCA in Richmond, California, and in a variety of other capacities. Ken is a graduate of U.C. Berkeley and is married to Robin, also a career YMCA professional.

Founded in 1920, the Rotary Club of Redlands today has approximately 120 members and meets every Thursday noon at 131 Cajon Street, Suite 5. The club’s motto is “Service Above Self.”

The success and longevity of the club can be directly attributed to members staying actively involved. Every member serves on a committee or two. Rotary committee chairs for the coming year include: Compact, Dave Maupin; Four-Way Test Speech Contest, Bernie O’Prey; Photography, Ralph Mendez; Registration, Brad Orton; Second Mile Award, Janet Greenfield; Student Representatives, Joe Richardson; Invocation, Jim Pinder; Music and Music Competition, Julie Michaels; Program, Carole Beswick; Properties, Floyd Williams; Sports, Paul Granillo; Spoke Newsletter, Scott Showler; Webmaster, Ron Burgess; Membership Development, Doug McAdam; Membership Retention, Lynda Schauf; New Member Briefing, Don McCue; Public Relations, Jane Dreher; Roster, Al Chichester; Social/Fellowship, Shirley Harry; Environmental Protection, Gene Ouellette; Friends and Community, Forrest Howe; Interact, Kevin Correia; Literacy, Marvin Hudson; Major Projects, Al Reid; Rotaract, Dennis Gunn; RYLA, Brian Ahlers; Scholarships and Awards, Nathan Gonzales; Students of the Month, Jim Nolin; Youth Services, Bob Hodges; Ambassadorial Scholarships, Jack Osborn; Group Study Exchange, Rick Carlson; Rotary Foundation, Ed Malesky; World Community Service, Dellita Kobold; Youth Exchange, Florin Rominu; Investments, Sean Lugo; Rotary Ride, Kevin Correia and Lynda Schauf; and Wine Tasting Extravaganza, Ray Watts and Larry Pyle.
