La Sierra University concerts for 2008-09
La Sierra University's music department will feature the following recitals and concerts during the 2008-09 school year. The university is at 4500 Riverwalk Parkway, Riverside. Performances take place in Hole Memorial Auditorium at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted. Ticket prices are general admission $10; seniors $5; Family rate $20; under age 12 free. Oct. 26. Faculty recital. Director of Vocal Studies Raejin Lee, soprano, will perform works by Purcell, Schubert, Mozart/Adam and Rachmaninoff with piano accompaniment by music department Chair Kimo Smith. Originally from Seoul, Korea, Lee has performed throughout the United States, Italy, and Korea. Her awards include a prize for distinguished performance of the Italian Art Song repertoire from Italian America Cultural Foundation. Lee recently completed doctoral studies at Rutgers University in New Jersey.
Nov. 8. Chamber music. Acclaimed musicians Jason Uyeyama, violin, Richard Andaya, cello and Vadim Serebryany, piano will perform Shostakovich Cello Sonata, Op. 40 and Shostakovich Piano Trio No. 2 in E Minor, Op. 67.
Jan. 10. Chamber music. Jason Uyeyama, violin, Maurycy Banaszek, viola, Eric Sung, cello and Vadim Serebryany, piano will perform the Beethoven String Trio in D, Op. 8, String Trio in D Op. 9 No. 2 and Brahms Piano Quartet in G Minor, Op. 25.
Jan. 25. Faculty recital. Trumpeter Richard Hofmann will perform. Hofmann, a Duke University and Cal State, Northridge graduate, performs with national orchestras and acts. His recording industry work includes trumpet solos for NBC's "Mad About You" and performance tracks for Fox Broadcasting Co.'s "Family Guy."
Feb. 8. Faculty recital. Oboist Rong-Huey Liu will perform with her husband and percussionist/composer/recording artist Steven Schmidt.
Feb. 22. Faculty recital. Violinist and director of string studies Jason Uyeyama will perform. Works will include those by Patrick Zimmerli and Beethoven. Uyeyama, a Julliard School graduate, is a regular player with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and an international performer. He performed with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra during their 2007-08 season.
March 8. Faculty recital. Classical guitarist Lee Zimmer will perform works by Manuel Ponce, J. S. Bach, Joaquin Turina and Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Zimmer also teaches guitar at the Fender Center for Performing Arts in Corona, arranges and records works for guitar.
April 5. Faculty recital. Pianist and director of keyboard studies Elvin Rodriguez will perform works by Latin-American composers. Rodriguez, a multiple award-winning pianist and extensive performer throughout the United States, graduated from the Manhattan School of Music and Teachers College, Columbia University.

May 2, 8 p.m. Opera scenes.
May 3. Faculty recital. Cellist Pin Fei Tang will perform works by Romantic period composers including Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky and Chopin. Tang, a native of China, studied at Beijing's Music School of the Army Academy of Fine Arts. She is a full scholarship graduate of the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore and earned a doctorate from the University of Maryland where she studied with the internationally known Guarneri String Quartet.
June 6. Chamber music. Jason Uyeyama, violin, Tariq Masri, bassoon, Kathleen Costello, clarinet and Bruce Hudson, horn will perform. Repertoire will include the Beethoven Septet, Op. 20.

Oct. 11, 4 p.m., La Sierra University Church, 4937 Sierra Vista Ave., Riverside. Invitational choral clinic concert featuring students from Seventh-day Adventist academies in Southern California and Arizona performing works by John Rutter, Morten Lauridsen, Moses Hogan, Rosephayne Powell, Craig Courtney and others.

Nov. 15. Fall Wind Ensemble concert to include works by Sam Hazo, Timothy Mahr, Andy Boysen, Eric Whitacre, and Jack Stamp.
Nov. 16. Fall LSU Symphony Orchestra concert featuring Gioachino Rossini¹s Overture to La Cenerentola, Johann Nepomuk Hummel¹s Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra in E Major with faculty member and trumpeter Richard Hofmann, and Franz Schubert¹s Symphony No. 8, the "Unfinished Symphony."
