La Sierra University art exhibits for 2008-09

La Sierra University's Brandstater Gallery will feature the following exhibits during the 2008-09 school year. The university is at 4500 Riverwalk Parkway, Riverside. Gallery hours are Sun., 2 - 5 p.m., Mon. through Thurs., 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Exhibits and receptions are free. Information is at (951) 785-2959. Oct. 13 - Nov. 3. The Brandstater Gallery, in partnership with the Riverside Art Museum, will present "Half Known Slow Burnt Layers," paintings by internationally renowned artist David Leapman. Gallery reception: Oct. 13, 6 - 8 p.m. Leapman, a native of London, U.K., represented Great Britain at the International Festival of Painting and has exhibited at the ICA and Serpentine Gallery in London. He is also a recipient of the John Moores Award, Britain's most prestigious painting prize. His work is found in collections around the world.

Nov. 10 - Dec. 11. An art faculty exhibition featuring new works derived from faculty members' areas of discipline which include graphic design, typography, printmaking, handmade books, mono prints and paintings. Reception: November 10, 6 - 8 p.m.

Jan. 12 - Feb. 9. "Books as Sculpture," a show by well-known artists depicting sculptural objects that function as books and as objects themselves. Exhibiting artists will include Carol Barton, Carol Chase Bjerke, Terry Braunstein, Rachelle Woo Chuang, Linda Ekstrom, Sam Erenberg, Paul Johnson, Susan Porteous, Sue Ann Robinson, Miriam Schaer, Genie Shenk, Todd Smith, Beth Thielen, Laura Stickney and Vilma Mendillo. Works by Shenk, Robinson and Bruanstein appear in collections around the world. Show curator is Jean Clad, award-winning Southern California curator and artist. Opening reception at the gallery will be Jan. 12, 6 - 8 p.m. A closing reception will be Feb. 9, 6-8 p.m., and will feature presentations by some of the artists.

Feb. 16 - March 9. An alumni exhibition will feature works by printmaker and art educator, Gabriela Martinez and nationally known painter and ceramic artist, Polly Cook. Martinez is currently working as an educator at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach and writes curriculum for summer art camps. The prestigious Bill Lowe Gallery in Santa Monica represents Cook. The Cable News Network has highlighted her work which is included in the collections of Vanderbilt University, Pepsi-Cola Co. and the Hyatt Regency. MCA Record's "One Voice" 1996 Olympic games compact disc features her art. Alumni Weekend Sat., Feb. 28, open 2 - 4 p.m., Sunday, 2 - 4 p.m. Closing reception will be March 9, 6 - 8 p.m.

May - Senior projects show- dates and times to be announced.
June - Seniors' show- dates and times to be announced.
