UCLA CB Alterraun Verner didnt have the best of days, getting beat twice for TD's and allowing Austin Collie to haul in 10 catches for 110 yards, all in the first half. UCLA DC DeWayne Walker said he was a little shocked that his star pupil struggled that badly against Collie, who is good but far from a superstar. "I'm just as shocked as you guys," I thought he could handle him, and that was our whole game plan going in. It didn't work out that way. I want to sit down with him, talk to him - not berate him - and get his confidence back." 2 CommentsLeave a comment |

Dear Coach Walker:
I was just wondering if you looked at tape of Austin from last year. He had success against you in the Rose Bowl when I believe he caught 2 TDs. He is legit and a superstar. He's not blazing, but he can flat out play. He used your defense again this week. 10 catches and 110 yards at halftime, I think he could have gone for 200 yards easy if they didn't pull him out for mercy's sake. He Collie is no superstar, yet, he just lit up your superstar, what does that say? It says you may be in denial.
Kevin,
I think a lot of people are misreading this comment and seem to think that it was Coach Walker that said Collie is not a superstar when in fact it was you who made this statement. Collie will play on Sundays and while that does not automatically make him a "superstar" it certainly says that at the collegiate level he is very close to being that.
My guess is you would have looked at a collegiate Jerry Rice and said he was nothing to be worried about but he seemed to do OK in the NFL. To many so-called analysts like to look at size and times and have that be the primary judge of an athlete. They are wrong more times than they are right.
Don't buy into the BCS conference superiority line because it will keep right on biting you in the behind.
