With seniors-to-be Michael Snaer, Avery Bradley and Xavier Henry taking their time to decide on a school, UCLA is exploring back-up options in its quest to find a shooting guard for its 2009 recruiting class. Among the shooting guards the staff has scouted extensively in Las Vegas this week are Anthony Marshall of Las Vegas Mojave High and Matt Vogrich of Lake Forest (Ill.) High.
I spoke to Vogrich's mom, Mary, this afternoon and she said her son has been hearing from UCLA regularly since the staff saw him at a tournament in Cincinnati at the start of the July evaluation period. Vogrich does not have a scholarship offer from UCLA, but his mom said he's definitely interested in the Bruins.
"He definitely perks up a little when UCLA is mentioned," Mary Vogrich said. "Right now I'd say geography is not an issue."
Vogrich's mom was unsure if a scholarship offer from UCLA was forthcoming or if her son is more of an insurance policy in case Snaer, Henry and Bradley head elsewhere. Vogrich has scholarship offers from Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Oregon State, Colorado, Baylor and Northwestern.
