UCLA lands elite power forward

Brendan Lane.JPGBrendan Lane, a 6-foot-9 power forward from Rocklin High near Sacramento, has decided to attend UCLA , his father Steve said Saturday.
Lane, one of the the West Coast's top big men in the class of 2009, informed UCLA Coach Ben Howland of his decision Saturday morning while he was on campus participating in the Adidas Nations Camp at Pauley Pavilion. The senior-to-be chose UCLA over Cal and Stanford.
"He wants to be at a successful program, and obviously UCLA has done that," Steve Lane said. "He connected well with Coach Howland. It's a program where he knows he has to compete 24-7 for playing time, and he likes that challenge."
Lane joins Modesto Christian forward Reeves Nelson as UCLA-bound players in the class of 2009. The Bruins have at least two more scholarships available and are expected to use at least one of those to land a guard.
UCLA offered Lane a scholarship in March, about the same time as Cal fired Coach Ben Braun and Stanford coach Trent Johnson bolted for LSU. That proved to be a perfect storm of circumstances for the Bruins to land the lanky forward.
"Over time UCLA became the program he wanted to go," Steve Lane said. "When Coach Braun and Coach Johnson left, it made Brandon realize he had to really focus on the program and not the coach."
Lane averaged 20.4 points and 11.7 rebounds as a junior at Rocklin High, leading the Thunder to a 30-3 record and a berth in the NorCal Playoffs. The three-sport star is also an accomplished high jumper and an all-conference water polo player.
