John Ramey is a sports anchor for KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO in Los Angeles. He also serves as the internet play-by-play voice for the UCR baseball team and contributed this blog from Sunday's win over Cal State Northridge. Sam Farber is the play by play voice of Cal State Northridge baseball and a good friend of mine. After the elation of Aaron Wible's walk off RBI hit to steal the win in the bottom of the 9th, I tried to empathize with Sam as we broke down after our postgame shows had ended. "That's a tough one to lose, amigo". Sam was having none of it: "Well, that's baseball." Baseball indeed. Northridge took a 3-2 lead to the bottom of the 9th. They were 3 outs away from taking two of three from Riverside, which would have been really inexcusable for the Highlanders, a team still believing in their ability to win the Big West. A loss would have dropped Riverside to 6-6 in the conference, and they were about to be a LONG way from the 4-way tie they shared for second place at the start of play Saturday. Northridge sent Edwin Quirarte, possessor of a 1.19 ERA, to the mound in the 9th to protect the lead. He couldn't hold it. That's baseball. Drew Garcia, the Highlander's leading hitter, was held hitless. He did, however, drive home the game's trying run in the 9th with a sacrifice fly. That's baseball. Stephen Penney, forever looking for his first win of the season as the Friday starter, has two lights-out outings in critical late-inning situations in both Friday and Sunday's win. That's baseball. And that's one big win to avoid a mini-disaster in the middle of the conference schedule. |
