The Pitre Dish
Star fullback Michael Pitre, a Riverside native, said his knee has left him "day-to-day" regarding his status for the Sept. 1 opener against Stanford, but it is appearing less likely by the day that he will be able to play. Pitre, one of the top fullbacks in the West Coast, has yet to miss a game throughout his college career.
On a related note, Pitre said he likes the way new offensive coordinator Jay Norvell uses the fullback in the offense. UCLA got the ball in Pitre's hands a lot under Tom Cable, but that seemed to lessen last season under former OC Jim Svoboda, whose offensive schemes seemed much more basic.
Pitre carried the ball 17 times as a sophomore but just five times last season. He did have 16 receptions (he had 10 in each of his first two seasons) but that was less by design and more the result of Pitre being a safety valve on a lot of plays when UCLA's quarterbacks came under durress.
