News and notes

- Nomar Garciaparra has been activated from the disabled list and will for now be only available for pinch-hitting duties while his calf continues to improve. Garciaparra thinks he can return to the lineup at some point this month.

- Tony Abreu will play without restrictions after recovering from an abdomen injury that team officials questioned enough that they didn't place him on any disabled list. Abreu declined comment, telling a team spokesman, "Tell them I'm tired and that I'll talk to them tomorrow."

- Hong-Chih Kuo has been transferred onto the 60-day disabled list to clear a 40-man roster spot for Wilson Valdez. Kuo has begun throwing off a mound, but had his session today scrapped due to more elbow soreness.

- The Dodgers have so many players called up that in tight quarters inside the Wrigley Field clubhouse, some players are sharing lockers. "Call the union to expand the roster to 50 so we can bring up more players," Jeff Kent mused. "We need more media to handle all the players we have."
