Kent speaks

"You could use all the fingers on your hand and point them all around," Jeff Kent said. "There were curious things that happened. There were perplexing things that happened. There were unfortunate things that happened. There were things that don't happen. You can't put your finger on it, but you can put your finger to it."

According to Kent, one of the problems was the amount of young players on the team.

"Especially when you have a lot of them, it's hard to influence a group of them. I don't know why they don't get it - professionalism, how to manufacture runs, how to keep your emotions in it."

"I'm angry and disappointed and perplexed and bitter."

Thanks for posting that. I wonder if Jeff Kent has looked at the statistics for this season? The "young players" basically outplayed the veterans in every facet of the game. This comment makes me hope he doesn't come back. I'm sure he's also just very frustrated, which is understandable, and maybe didn't think through the veil of his emotions, but logically, anyone who's watched this season with both eyes open will know that Kent is completely wrong.

Bluebleeder:

I feel like going all George Lopez on Kent's comment

"mas puto!!"

John Shade:

Hopefully, then, bitter enough to retire. This sort of attitude we don't need, anymore than we need over-the-hill-ers like Hernandez, Loiaza, Gonzalez, Garciaparra, Hillenbrand and such like.

Such "kids" were the players who actually produced. Loney? Kemp? Martin? Billingsley? The best players on the team, and by far.

Thanks for sticking around, Jeff. Now go ride your dirt bike, please.

Peter:

I'm glad this finally blew up. Look at the success of the young players on the D-Backs and Rockies. Next year we start with our now experienced kids and hopefully a new manager.

I can't wait for next season. Loney, Martin, Kemp et al ... I can't wait.

El Lay Dave:

PROFESSIONALISM??? This sort of disgruntled and bitter chatter is exactly what true professionals do NOT engage in.

Gee, and this is day his option vested. Great. Retire now Kent and take your curmudgeonly attitude with you.

(As a career middle-of-the-order guy, I doubt Kent had to hit to the right side to advance a runner all that often.)

blunut:

I never liked Jeff Kent. But now I do.

Cranestuff:

I have been, and will continue to be, a Dodger fan. So I like to look at performance over periods of years. That clearly is not the perspective of players nearing the ends of their careers. While I have liked Kent and Gonzales, it isn't important to me that they win in their last year(s). It is too bad that the way professional baseball works today is that established players don't have too much interest in the long term for any particular team. So they ask for sacrifices (like trading prospects for a current year result) and complain about mistakes by less experienced players. Sorry guys. The youth movement, and the prospect for several exciting years ahead, are a lot more important to me than whether you, personally, win this year. I don't want a team like the Giants, and don't much respect high-price players who complain about their personal concerns while not particularly caring about the Dodgers beyond the end of their contracts.
