Boom!

The Dodgers are on the verge of officially signing David Wells, who has published an autobiography called "Perfect I'm Not: Boomer on Beer, Brawls, Backaches and Baseball." Don't let the base salary the Dodgers are on the hook for fool you, Wells will be handsomely paid for his efforts without having to rely on royalties from the book that undoubtedly is an Oprah favorite.

Wells could earn about $1.2 million in incentives, as he will be paid by the Dodgers an amount close to the $176,470 the Padres were paying him per start. The difference is that the Dodgers apparently sweetened the deal to get Wells, committing to the incentives for about the seven starts he is expected to make. The Padres would have only paid that amount for five more starts.

Aren't you going to ask how my day went? Rumors of a deal for Wells were swirling during game time, so I checked with assistant general manager Kim Ng after the last out on that. "No deal is imminent," she said. I took that to mean a deal wouldn't come yesterday, but wasn't holding my breath. After dinner, a baseball source confirmed that the deal was indeed coming. Then at 12:52 a.m., Gregg Clifton, Wells' agent, came through by returning my phone messages and speaking about the deal.

That call made my night, err, morning, as it's my preference not to use shadowy sources in my story. It also made the early wakeup call today and flight delay going to New York just a little more bearable. Sitting bleary-eyed in an airport waiting area wondering what's on Brett Tomko's mind is why this job rocks!

What's everyone's feeling on Wells?
