« history maker | Main | x-rays negative »

he said what?

So, anyone who has followed the progression of Ervin Santana this season has read or heard somewhere that he is upset with the media.

Specifically, the beat writers who cover him on a daily basis.

In a sidebar in today's LA Times, Santana told Dylan Hernandez that the beat writers "write things I don't say."

He claimed this last weekend in Boston, finally agreeing to do an interview with a translator, something he's done just one time before in his previous 75 major-league starts. It was a bush league move.

Then, to further this spoiled brat, he spouts off to a non-beat writer, quoting Santana as saying "They're all bad, they're all bad, they're all bad. I was happy in triple A. I was happy because nobody bothered me."

Well, Ervin, then go back to Class AAA.

If you think that our job is to portray people poorly and only concentrate on the negative, you're sorely mistaken. Don't you remember last season when you won a staff-high 16 games?

To make matters even more laughable is that he claims he's misquoted. How can that be possible?

For one, he doesn't speak much, for another he is rarely quoted even if he does well because he never says anything worthy of the space in the newspaper and when he does say something interesting ... he ... talks ... so ... slow ... it's ... very ... easy ... to ... keep ... up ... with ... what ... he ... says.

(Plus, not only do I take notes, but I use a tape recorder as backup just in case I miss something).

How come Ervin is upset? He was so lousy in his time in the majors this season that any time his stats were reported, of course he looked bad. A 5-11 record with a 6.22 ERA when he was sent down? A 1-9 record on the road with an 8.79 ERA?

Jeez, those numbers would be similar to what my pitching numbers would look like.

Ervin, here's some advice, take responsibility for your actions. Don't pawn off the blame on someone else. And if you have a problem with us beat writers tell us, don't spout off to someone else unaware of the beef you have with the media.

Daniel Gray:

Any word on how Kotchman's xrays went today? I noticed he's not in Thursday's lineup.

Bill:

If Santana is gonna talk up his game, he better deliver when it counts. Tonight, he didn't. The Mariners are now a game back and, unlike Santana, they seem to be able to beat average teams.

Meet the new Ervin, same as the old Ervin.

Jeff:

Ervin may not have been talking about you when he said he was misquoted.

Also, calling him a spoiled brat for refusing to speak with the media seems a bit overboard. He may be unprofessionaal, sensitive, and holds grudges. Your comments seem too vindictive to be fit for a reporter who should maintain some semblance of objectivity.

Last, were you making fun of him for speaking English, his second language, slowly?

Check out this guys website. He is an Angel fan that you guys should do a story on!
