conspiracy theory

UPDATE #2: I talked to Francisco Rodriguez about this white substance on the underside of his bill and he grabbed the hat from his locker, flipped it over and said "This?"
On the black underside of his cap was a sizable white smudge.
"It's rosin," Rodriguez said.
There is a rosin bag on the back of every mound in professional baseball filled with the white, chalky substance that pitcher's can use on their hands to eliminate sweat so they can better grip the ball. John Lackey, for instance, puts it on his left wrist, just above his glove, so he can wipe his right hand on the wrist instead of constantly going to the rosin bag.
So, why does Rodriguez continually tug on his cap, bringing suspicion about?
Because he stopped wearing his trademark goggles, he fidgets with his hat instead of his glasses.

UPDATE: I spoke with MLB spokesman Pat Courtney later this morning, and he informed me that Major League Baseball is looking into the matter. The Texas Rangers, however, did not ask MLB to investigate, they are just performing their own due diligence.
The Angels' clubhouse opens soon, and at that time I will talk to Rodriguez and Manager Mike Scioscia and hopefully find out what's going on. For those of you who want to take a look at the Web site that is causing all the issues, Click here
I e-mailed this guy, Derek Zumsteg, who wrote a book on cheating in baseball and have not heard back from him. He is the one who put this information on his site.
Thanks to several readers who sent this web address along, notably Bill Chandos, who got it to me first.

Received this comment from James Duffy in the previous entry, but it's so interesting, I had to devote a whole blog to it.
The rumor going around the baseball blogs is that K-Rod has come under suspicion for using a substance on his hat. It seems that there is a white substance under the bill of his cap and he regularly touches his hat when pitching. I think it is salt from sweat residue. Anyway you can help clear this up?
I hadn't noticed that before, but I can certainly go and talk to him about it. Rodriguez isn't always the most accomodating, but if he's in a decent mood, he can chat for awhile. We'll see what happens and I'll post an update on here.

Rule 8.02(a) Comment: If at any time the ball hits the rosin bag it is in play. In the case of rain or wet field, the umpire may instruct the pitcher to carry the rosin bag in his hip pocket. A pitcher may use the rosin bag for the purpose of applying rosin to his bare hand or hands. Neither the pitcher nor any other player shall dust the ball with the rosin bag; neither shall the pitcher nor any other player be permitted to apply rosin from the bag to his glove or dust any part of his uniform with the rosin bag.

I also note that the rule says nothing about wiping rosin on your hands on to your uniform.
