Residents evacuated to Silent Valley Club

In Poppet Flats, several hundred people from the Silent Valley Club, a private RV resort, were evacuated to the resort’s family center.

"There are fire breaks around the campground," said Sid Perry of Victorville who was vacationing at the resort. "We should be OK. At least I hope so."

"People are panicking, they're just panicking, but Silent Valley is still the best-kept secret," said Mike Murray, 53, of Yucaipa.

Jane Bryant who works in the office at the Club said the phone was ringing constantly with people trying to reach each other. She was storing all sorts of animals in the office. The area had been without power since 6 a.m.

John Skiles, 43, of Hemet who was camping there, said he was very worried.

"I'm nauseas," he said. "Mostly I'm worried about my RV. I still owe $20,000 on it. I'm just hoping to get home."

A resident of Poppet Flats, Margaret G. Lopez, 63, said she was woken up at 6 a.m. by firefighters and told to evacuate. She quickly gathered up her dogs, Buddy and Oreo, and her cats, Booties and George.

"I didn't think about me," she said. "The only thing I took was what I could remember of my medicines. I rushed out so fast I just didn’t know what to take. But I had to take my babies. I have to take care of them."
