The Riverside City Council has approved in concept a new five-year rate plan for commercial and residential garbage removal.
Residential rates would rise yearly starting in fiscal year 2009-10 based solely on the consumer price index, a gauge of inflation.
Commercial rates would go up in fiscal year 2008-2009, which starts July 1. A monthly charge of $79.58 for weekly pick-up of one standard commercial trash bin would rise to $94.93.
Notice will now go out to property owners and the council will hold a public hearing within 45 days of the notice, giving the public a chance to comment on the proposed rate increases. The council then will vote on whether to approve them.
