City personnel shut down part of an East County thoroughfare today to allow for the removal of about 200 pounds of bees from a ficus tree in front of a downtown coffee shop.
La Mesa Boulevard was closed between Spring Street and Palm Avenue for about two hours, beginning at 6 a.m., according to police.
The city had been receiving complaints about a large swarm of the insects in the area, though no related injuries were reported.
