Recently in Trends CategoryAs the outbreak of swine flu spreads and doctors don't have specific answers on its severity, most readers don't seem to be panicking. I asked for your questions about swine flu we could pass along to Mayor Will Wynn, who is briefing the press right now about local response. Here's a sampling. --If I oink when I sneeze, do I need to go to the emergency room? --When pigs fly will there be a mutant Avian Swine Super Flu Virus? --How do they feel about changing the name of the epidemic to "pig rickets" or perhaps "Porky's revenge"? --Is it safe to breathe?... how about now? ...Congratulations, 81st Legislature. You've collectively kicked the 80th Legislature's butt when it comes to filing bills. The filing deadline was on Friday, and about 900 new bills got in that day before close-of-business. The final tally: On the House side, a total of 4697 bills were filed, up 18% from the 2007 session, in which 3,977 made it to the clerk's office. On the Senate side, an even bigger jump. This session, senators filed 2,447 bills, up 26% from last session's 1,944. Your bill total of 2009? 7,144, for a... An invitation to those of you who are geeked-out, like me. The newly appointed Chair of Appropriations is only the second Texas Appropriations Committee Chair to serve two or more nonconsecutive terms. The only other guy to do this was Chairman Bill Heatly, half a century ago.... Research 2000 is polling US Senate races for progressive blog DailyKos. The Noriega campaign says when it's released, it will reflect this week's Rasmussen poll, which showed Noriega within striking distance of Cornyn. Look for that on DailyKos in about an hour, hour and a half. ...UT's new Center for Politics and Governance will include a Hispanic Policy Leadership Institute, to focus on the growing influence of Hispanics in both politics and policy.
