Recently in Media CategoryIn his first term in the Texas Senate, state Sen. Kirk Watson, D-Austin, took home Texas Monthly magazine's 'Rookie of the Year' prize. His sophomore year (despite the bizarre ending) was arguably even stronger, and Watson landed on the magazine's "Ten Best" legislators list in its July issue. Said Paul Burka and Patti Kilday Hart of Watson (the rest is available at Texas Monthly): He's the Galápagos penguin of the Texas Legislature. That rarest of birds--an effective liberal--Watson has adapted... Well, that was strange. First, press got notified that Republican state Rep. Betty Brown, R-Terrell, would hold a midday press conference to rally her R troops in support of a strong Voter ID bill. Then, House Democrats sent out a blast that they, too, would have a press conference at lunch, and in the same room. The location wasn't reserved, so it was first-come, first-serve for members upon lunch recess.
Couple of links to point you to this Monday morning, as I fight another "case of the Monday's". First, Newsweek invites Austinite (and UT Prof) Bill Minutaglio to write a piece on Bush's simpler, post-presidency "afterlife" here in Texas. I've linked to the full story, but a sample: When Bush last lived here full time, he was a media darling with sky-high approval ratings. Karl Rove had conducted a "front-porch campaign," inspired by the candidacy of William McKinley. Governor Bush waited for national GOP leaders to come to him at the stately whit... State Senator Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, makes an appearance on the cover of 360 West, a lifestyle magazine that brands itself as a "full circle view of where we live". It looks like the accompanying article is for subscribers-only, so I won't be able to link that to you. But for the more visually-oriented of you out there, here's the cover shot of the lawmaker.
Governor Rick Perry, secession and swine flu made Bill Maher's "new rules" on Friday night. Check it out. If you can't watch this from your mobile device right now, Maher said: "Since ... I love a good twitter fight. The standard bearer is this one, between a tech reporter and a source, a PR gal from Toronto. It's the ultimate twitter meltdown, and I love, love, love it. In comparison, the twitter kerfuffle between Burnt Orange Report's Matt Glazer and Austin Mayoral candidate Brewster McCracken's communications guy, >> Continue reading: Cyber Spat in the Austin Mayoral Race
Just got my weekly email from Time magazine with the "10 Most Popular Stories of the Week" on time.com. Opened it up to find a huge photo of Governor Rick Perry. The top story of the week was a piece called "What's all that secession ruckus in Texas?" (Full story... Budget architect and state Sen. Steve Ogden, R-Bryan, sat down Sunday morning for some budget talk at our competing station. (Dallasites looking for similar chatter: Our sister station has a 30 minute gabfest available at 9:00am Sundays -- WFAA-TV's Inside Politics. It's a mix of Dallas and state political news/talk.) Ogden, wearing a red tie and fashionable Lone star flag lapel pin, said the $182 billion budget translates to $8,500 per Texas resident. He attributed an increase in this budget over last session's due to the federal stim... Political Junkie's gotten a KVUE-ized makeover, to better fit with the KVUE look. I'm still here doing the bloggin' and nothing changes except for style. (And now you get ads for Best Buy and the like!) Let me know what you think, and if there are any style issues with the template you're running into. Thanks, reader(s). ...Sadly, this isn't the first time we've said goodbye to press corps colleagues here on Political Junkie, but today's loss is a big one. The Dean of the Capitol press corps leaves the beat today, after covering Texas politics since 1971. It's the Houston Chronicle's Clay Robison's last day. The paper downsized its newsroom by more than 20% on Wednesday, and the cuts included Clay. His institutional knowledge, understanding of the process and connections to generations of sources all leave with him, and that's a huge loss. Some messages from his colleagues:
