McCain to Outline Energy Plan in Houston

Amid the presidential candidates' back and forth over offshore oil drilling, Senator John McCain is in Houston today to outline his energy plan. It's expected to hit on conservation and alternative energy sources.

"This great city is known as the oil capital of America. But people in Houston and all of Texas understand as well as anyone that the high price of oil and gas today is causing great harm all across our economy," he says in a speech to be delivered at a 4 p.m. event open to the public at the downtown Houston's Hilton Americas hotel.
For more on the speech and the response from the DNC, see the H-Chron piece.

Watch Those Right-of-Ways

Some signs of the fierce primary campaigning remain, but even signs for upcoming races are getting tossed if they're in the wrong place.

Our photographer rolled as a City of Austin code inspector pulled out two Rosemary Lehmberg signs from the ground on Friday. They were sitting in a right-of-way, and even though the DA runoff is still ahead for Travis County voters, the signs had to go. (Click the photo for the video.)

I asked him whether the fact the election was still coming up made a difference, but he said no.

"Technically, it's in the right-of-way," said inspector Terry Hurd.

Obviously these guys have more important things to do, so they aren't patrolling town for errant signs all the time. But if they see them, they will pick them up. So the City of Austin reminds you to know your right-of-ways. They typically start where private driveways end.

Unlike Houston, Austin looks pretty clean of signs around polling places now, with the exception of the Travis County Courthouse, where you can find the LJD sign shown above. But if you still want to show your support on your private property, that's totally cool, unless of course you live along a highway, in which case that sign needed to be down within 10 days of the election.

Rush Limbaugh Slams Texas Capitol Reporter

Castro
"Drive-by wacko babe" April Castro

The Associated Press' April Castro is now a member of an elite club. The "I-got-slammed-by-Rush-on-the-radio" club.

Last Friday, Castro's family in the small Texas town of Sonora (3,000 proud, baby) got calls from their friends, exclaiming, "Rush is talking about April Castro!"

Limbaugh didn't like a story she wrote about Texas being one of the worst polluters on the planet. According to her piece, Texas leads the nation in CO2 emmissions.Read the story here.

He calls Castro a "drive-by wacko babe" (there's something you need to put on your business card, April). And says this:

First, Texas gave America Bush. Now they're destroying Mother Erf; they won't buy into the global warming hoax; and they like big cars! Why, it's a disaster down thar, folks. Almost makes you cry, if you can stop laughing at all this.
Hear the rest of what Rush has to say, here.
