Recently in Campaign Finance CategoryUS Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison's spokesman says the senator will return the campaign money she's received from Texas billionaire R. Allen Stanford. Stanford's come under scrutiny for what one federal official called banking "fraud of shocking magnitude". Since 1989, the Houston businessman donated a total of $7,300 to KBH, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. No word on whether US Sen John Cornyn, R-Texas, will follow suit. She put $7 million of her federal campaign money into her state campaign coffers. (When she announced late last year, she transferred just $1 million over.) Her cash-on-hand is now $7.9 million. The 30-day-out federal campaign finance reports are trickling out, and U.S. Rep Michael McCaul, R-Texas, is sitting on almost 600K for the final stretch. McCaul reported $597,740 cash on hand in his third quarter filing. He raised $283,000 in the third quarter from 406 individual donors. So the average size of a donation to McCaul was $697. "I am pleased with our fund raising efforts and the number of individual contributors to our campaign," McCaul said. "It shows our message of reform and responsible government is resonating with the residents of the 10th Congressional District." Challe... Is a U.S. Senate seat in Texas worth battling it out for? The head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee says no. From MSNBC's First Read blog: Sen. Charles Schumer, (D-NY) head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, spoke to reporters this morning about his party's prospects for increasing their numbers this cycle. He seemed ready to count his chickens before they've hatched when he said, "The wind is more strongly at our backs than ever before." Last week, the Williamson County Republicans demanded that Diana Maldonado, candidate for the Texas House, give back the money she recieved from Annie's List, a PAC that gets contributions from Fred Baron. Baron is the former John Edwards finance chair who admitted to paying hush money to keep the Edwards affair from going public. The spectre of Fred Baron's now being brought into the US Senate race between Senator John Cornyn and challenger Rick Noriega. The Cornyn campaign wants Noriega to give the Baron money back, too. Senator John Cornyn walloped his challenger, Rick Noriega in 2nd quarter fundraising. As for cash-on-hand, Cornyn's stash is ten times the size of Noriega's, which is going to come in really handy as people start paying attention to this race after Labor Day. A look at the top lines: CORNYN NORIEGA Thoughts? ...A lot of press is focused today on Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's opting out on public campaign financing. He becomes the first presidential candidate to forgo public money. And it's a reversal of his earlier position. His campaign is explaining it by saying the public system has been so gamed by special interests that it wasn't something he wanted to be part of anymore. The practical reality for the Obama campaign is that it won't have limits on its spending anymore.
