Recently in 2010 Gubernatorial Race CategoryIn a three-city tour on Wednesday, Democrat Tom Schieffer is officially declaring his candidacy for governor. He's starting in his hometown of Fort Worth, then jetting to Houston before winding down with a stop in Austin. His key issues, according to a release, will be healthcare, education and a "revival of Texas' can-do spirit". "It has been a long time since we had any vision in this state, and I want to do something about that," Schieffer said. "I am a Democrat - as Sam Rayburn used to say, without prefix, suffix or apology -- and I think it is time we all had a governor." He's planning on visit... State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, D-San Antonio, has been subject of speculation about a possible 2010 gubernatorial bid for months. But in a statement released this morning, the longtime senator says she won't be putting herself or her family through the hurly burlyness of a statewide campaign in Texas. Here's the end-of-press-release-twist. "That's why I think Senator Kirk Watson should raise his sights and run for Governor. I've watched as Senator Watson has emerged as a leader in the state Senate on the issues of most importance to Texans. While staying true to Democratic values, he is a bipartisan pragm... Couple of links to point you to this Monday morning, as I fight another "case of the Monday's". First, Newsweek invites Austinite (and UT Prof) Bill Minutaglio to write a piece on Bush's simpler, post-presidency "afterlife" here in Texas. I've linked to the full story, but a sample: When Bush last lived here full time, he was a media darling with sky-high approval ratings. Karl Rove had conducted a "front-porch campaign," inspired by the candidacy of William McKinley. Governor Bush waited for national GOP leaders to come to him at the stately whit... Governor Rick Perry, who's enjoying being a darling of the tea party movement, signed the first bill of the 2009 legislative session into law this afternoon. But all the reporters wanted to talk about is the flurry of attention he's getting for allegedly supporting secession. The governor cleared things up, saying he never said Texas should secede.
Failed 2006 independent gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman has taken the first step toward another bid for Texas governor, this time as a Democrat. He sent out a letter to Texans this morning, which is in full after the jump and excerpted below: Here's the way I see it: Democrats + Independents = Victory Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Schieffer announced he's hired longtime Houston Chronicle Austin bureau chief Clay Robison as his new Communications Director. As we lamented last week, Robison was part of last week's Chronicle "reduction in force". Schieffer is a former US ambassador to Australia and business partner of George W Bush (when they were both involved with the Texas Rangers). "I am gratified that someone of Clay's reputation and integrity will be joining our team," ... Governor Rick Perry announced at a family-owned Houston hardware store he will not accept about half a billion dollars in federal stimulus money headed to Texas for unemployment benefits. "I am here today to stand with Texas employers and the millions of Texans they employ to resist further government intrusion into their businesses through an expansion of our state's unemployment insurance program," Perry said. "My focus has been, and continues to be, cultivating an environment that creates more jobs for Texans. That is why I am so concerned about the belief that has gained a foothold in our nati... Ambassador Tom Schieffer spent a few minutes of his press conference this morning (in which he announced his exploratory committee for Texas governor in 2010) batting back questions about his friend and former business partner, George W. Bush. Here's what he said when asked what he thought of Bush's job as president:
Second in an occasional series For this installment of Impact Players, I didn't have to randomly choose an interview subject because from here on out, the subjects will be nominated by the previous Impact Player. Luis Saenz, Governor Rick Perry's 2006 Campaign Director-turned-contract lobbyist, was nominated by Jay Propes. Just like Propes, Saenz doesn't like being in fro... So far this session, we've seen the seniors, the community colleges, even the interior decorators rally at the capitol. But few of them get the guest appearances of Governor Rick Perry, Lt. Governor David Dewhurst AND Attorney General Greg Abbott. All three will show up to rally with several anti-abortion groups on this "Pro-Life Day". The event's at 10am on the Capitol's south steps. They will speak in favor of state Sen. Dan Patrick/state Rep Frank Corte's legislation (SB 182/HB 36) which requires mothers seeking abortions to first hear the heartbeat and see a sonogram of the fetus. The Governor w... |
