State Rep. Burt Solomons, R-Carrollton, doesn't want teenagers in tanning beds. He's totally okay with Mystic Tan, where you go into a booth and get sprayed with some fake color. But he doesn't want teens under the simulated UV rays. His HB 1310 originally bans all Texans under the age of 18 from tanning beds unless they had written doctor's consent.
It's out of committee and on the House floor today -- but Solomons says it will be substituted. He will change the ban to all teens 16.5 and under, and those who are between the ages of 16.5 and 18 will need express parental consent to use tanning beds. The substitute is being pushed outside in the lobby with some documents showing pictures of various melanoma. To the lobby's credit, the pictures are on the second sheet of a packet instead of the first. Much appreciated. 1 CommentsLeave a comment |

There's too much politics in Texas to fit into a newscast, so the fun continues here.

I don't think tanning beds use "simulated" UV radiation, they generate actual UV.
Exposure to UV causes tanning and sunburn. Extensive exposure to UV (tanning and sunburn) as a child is one of the strongest indicators for melanoma later in life.
I recently lost a friend who was less than 50 to metastatic melanoma and left behind 5 school age kids. Unlike many cancers which are now very treatable, if melanomas are not caught very early and removed, then the prognosis for survival is very poor.
Take a closer look at the pictures in that packet, you might save your life or the life of someone you love.
