AG Says Leo Berman Can Run For Governor AND Keep Seat

State Rep. Leo Berman, R-Tyler, who you may remember from an ethnically-charged spat a few weeks ago, has been batting around the idea of running for Texas Governor to bring a greater focus to illegal immigration issues.

"If we can't get anything done about illegal aliens during the next session of the legislature, which starts next January, then I will announce my candidacy for governor of Texas," he said to KLTV-TV last summer.

The Attorney General today issued an opinion saying any member can stay in his/her House seat and run for governor at the same time. The nut graph of the the opinion:

Given the lack of constitutional and statutory provisions restricting a state legislator from running for Governor, a legislator is not legally required to resign from that position upon announcing his or her candidacy for Governor.
Will Berman actually run? What do y'all think?

Rep. Leo Berman looks and sounds like a jerk. You're an elected official... its your job to sit there and take criticism WITHOUT BEING A RACIST. Period. Why did you have to go there macaca??????

It's clear cut, simple... you don't have to be a pansy, but you don't tell anyone else who works hard and plays by the rules to go home. They are home dill-weed....if you don't like being called evil, then become a role model people can be proud of. Right now, who's proud they elected Rep. Berman? :) Nobody, thats who. What's his problem? Come on dude, you think you got a even a hairs chance at being Governor....pleeez.

Eric (with family in Tyler boooyaaa)

Obviously, Eric, you are a gullable individual who believes everything you here on tv or read in blogs are true. Berman is not a racist, the comment of "why don't you go home" was refering to home as Dallas.... please use common sense next time... the reason we have the racial divide in this country is because of sensitive people like you who has to assume that just because a comment is made to another person of another race that it must be racist. Grow up and come back when you have the full story!!!!
