Slideshow: Texas House Members Lounge

Outgoing House Administration committee chairman Tony Goolsby and interim State Preservation Board Director John Sneed gave a media tour of the renovated House Members Lounge Monday. Below is quick look at what the $140,000 in taxpayer dollars went to upgrade, and click here for who took credit/blame for the project after much circular blame gaming over who made the decisions.

To watch the slideshow with your preferences, roll over the window to speed up, pause, etc. Click the window to see photos in a larger size. Click the little quote bubble in the bottom left hand corner of the picture window if you'd like to read the captions along with the slideshow.

Karen Brooks' cowboy booted gams in that photo?

Am I the only one who thinks that the fuss over this "scandal" is ridiculous? First off, the Capitol is the pride of Texas, let's keep it looking nice.

Second, given the overall size of Texas' state budget, what's $140K? That means Texas' 24 million citizens chipped in about about half a penny each.

You are NOT the only one who thinks the flap about the member's lounge is over-the-top.

What I found interesting in the reporting of the story was the circle of blame-gaming as to who was in charge. As many things go in government - the act of sprucing up the lounge wasn't the offense, it was the principle of open government being offended -- the lack of transparency in the process, whether proper protocol was followed is unclear, no one taking credit/blame for it... until last week, of course, when Goosby made an about-face and fell on his sword, er, chandelier.

Anyway it's a worthwhile discussion as to whether this merited the coverage it wound up getting. Of course, so much of politics is about optics. And the optics of this, for lawmakers, was not great.

There's too much politics in Texas to fit into a newscast, so the fun continues here.
