Huffman Beats Bell for SD 17 Seat

Republican Joan Huffman will join Democrat Wendy Davis as the two freshwomen in the state Senate next session. Voters picked the person for the final undecided seat in the Texas lege in a special election runoff tonight, in the Houston-area. Huffman defeated former Congressman/gubernatorial candidate Chris Bell by a 56% to 44% margin, of about 40,000 votes cast.

State Democratic Party Chairman Boyd Richie sent out a tersely worded statement this evening, listing the numerous tactics he believed Republicans employed to help lift Huffman to victory.

But the district largely favors Republican candidates and was previously held by a Republican state Senator (Kyle Janek), so the degree to which sabotage or schadenfreude played a role depends on whom you ask.

There's too much politics in Texas to fit into a newscast, so the fun continues here.
