Who Won The Senate Debate? We Both Did

10:37 PM Thu, Oct 09, 2008 |

After the candidates got off stage, the Cornyn and Noriega campaigns each sent emails to reporters declaring their candidate had won the debate.

Here's Noriega campaign manager Mark Bell:
"Did you hear what John Cornyn said tonight in his first debate against Rick Noriega?

"I support the status quo."

It shouldn't come as a surprise: On every issue -- the economy, health care, energy and gas prices -- Texans know that they're not better off than they were when Cornyn took office."

Here's Cornyn spokesman Kevin McLaughlin:
"Senator Cornyn handily won tonight's debate. He clearly had the best command of the issues and his values and principles are most in line with his fellow Texans. Rick Noriega offered empty rhetoric and no solutions."

On a 1-10 scale

Cornyn clearly was a 9.5 and the debate seemed second nature to him. I heard him describe as cool, calm, and collected as Senator Obama during a debate. Even with how poor the debate production was.

Noriega was a 5.8 . He was only walking talking points and had no way to discuss things beyond what he glanced over earlier. He couldn't repudiate what was said on the fly without 'phoning a friend'. His negative attacks and no recourse with solutions gave listeners a bad taste in their mouths. I expected more.

Shick actually came out as a 6.4. She seemed to give straight direct talk, but making statements like "The terrorist won" is not something that should be made as a senatorial candidate. Her ability to stay positive and not go negative made her come out ahead of Noriega. She should be allowed to debate in Dallas.

There's too much politics in Texas to fit into a newscast, so the fun continues here.
