Capitol Press Corps Shrinks Again

8:14 PM Mon, Sep 08, 2008 |
Elise Hu

This one is tough to write. My first friend in the "tribe" (aka Capitol Press Corps), John Moritz, decided to take a buyout from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He worked here in the paper's Austin bureau for the last decade. He's worked for the paper much longer.

moritzsmall.jpgMoritz back when we first became friends, during the 2006 gubernatorial race.

I met Moritz in 2006, when Chris Bell was 45 minutes late to an event at Texas State. We stood in the lobby waiting for him for so long that we became friends and wound up going to lunch together that afternoon. Since then, it seems like we've eaten lunch together more times than I've pitched stories.

He gave me a useful tip when I started covering the Texas lege. "It seems like people sweat stuff a lot more than you'd expect." He wasn't lying.

If you read this blog, you probably know John -- or have read his byline many times. Please join me in wishing him the best by adding your favorite Moritz memories in the comments, or by emailing me so I can post them.

It's a shame the Fort Worth Star-Telegram is abanoning its Capitol coverage. They had a terrific bunch working for them, and now they'll all be gone.

John's sense of humor and friendliness toward everyone was exceeded only by his ability to get to the heart of a story. He routinely decoded developments on complex issues like school finance into plain English for me -- and for thousands of readers.

Sad development. Moritz is an honest and honorable guy. Last print reporter out of the 1005 building, turn off the lights. The future looks like an Associated Press near-monopoly on what you read about state news.

I only recently met Moritz for the first time in Denver and didn't stop laughing until we parted ways in the assigned/unassigned press tents.

When I was complaining about lack of wireless internet: "Back in my day, Mean Rachel, we had to write our stories in blood and tie them to the ankle of a carrier pigeon for submission."

When I showed him a picture I took of Jesse Jackson: "You know, you haven't really met Jesse Jackson until he's invited you up to his room."

And one really hilarious moment when the Planned Parenthood people put a hot pink condom in front of his breakfast plate at the delegation breakfast the last day, and he attempted to take a picture of it (for the blog...?). After a few minutes of trying to get the camera to work, trying to cover the flash with his finger, and trying to find an indoor setting on the camera, he looked up, exasperated, and said "Guys are always fumbling with the condom."
