Would you like your grass original recipe or crispy?

I have stubbornly refused to do much more than water my vegetable beds by hand and set up the sprinkler for one really deep watering a month for the benefit of that huge pecan tree in my yard.
As a result, most of the grass is my front yard is now crispy and the backyard grass is all but dead.
SIGH.
Part of me feels disdain for the grass because it goes against my desire to be water-wise and go native. But the other part of me longs for the smell of fresh cut grass and soft turf under bare feet like I experienced when I was a young-un in Virginia.
So now I'm on the hunt for a groundcover to replace the St. Augustine that just isn't surviving the summers. I need one for my front yard that will surround my kitchen garden and one for my backyard for my little one to run and play games in.
Any ideas? Leave a comment below...

Most of the ground covers I can think of would be too tall for your little one to run and play in. Seems it would trip, and make it difficult. If more folks would conserve like you are we wouldnt have the water situation were in now. Thanks!

If you're looking for a drought-tolerant grass, try bermuda or buffalograss. They won't tolerate shade like St. Augustine, but will handle drought much, much better.

My mother and I are both very native plant oriented. I have been advised that a mix of rye and buffalo grass does well in this area. My grass too looks like matchsticks. I do believe we will find out, come spring, how well that mix is. Good luck with yours.

Terri talked about a new grass mixture of buffalo grass, curly--something and blue--something. What's the name of the blend and where can I find it. Do we have to remove the dead St. Augustine first before we seed this new grass? Please help.
