Summer vegetable seedlings in the ground

6:38 PM Mon, Mar 23, 2009 |
Cindy Brummer

Well, they are a bit late going in the ground, but all of the seedlings I've been babying since January are finally planted. I had planned to plant them March 14-15, but with that cold snap that hit Central Texas, it just wasn't a good time.
So, early Saturday morning, we walked outside with the seedling trays in hand and some shovels and got to work. The weather was perfect as we turned over the beds and added compost and soil amendments -- cottonseed meal, Texas greensand, and dried molasses.
I tried out a square-foot gardening method I've been reading about that allows you to plant closer together -- which sounds good in the urban garden. We'll see how it works.
I realized that my imagination is bigger than my garden. I had so many seedlings -- and I'm afraid none of them will make it -- that there was little room for much else. Hence the reason we have already started work on two new raised beds for the fall.
And I plan to get an early start on fall, too. I will start those seed trays June 1, so it's less likely they'll be so puny when they go in the ground.
