I've been keeping a close eye on my bean plants for the past week after noticing something had been eating them. One day I found this (the worm in the photo on the right). Well, they were actually a little smaller (I guess they grew since I first discovered them). They were on every leaf, but I had to look really carefully for them because they had curled an edge of the leaves over themselves and made a little tunnel to hide in. They had made mincemeat of the leaves. Rather than freak out, I pulled out my trusty garden hose and attempted to spray those little suckers off. Hmmm... not that successful. I hesitated. Part of me hates killing living things, no matter how gross I think they are. What if they turn out to be larvae of butterflies or some other beneficial insect? Then I thought about how much I wanted to eat fresh green beans. It's either the beans or the bugs at this point. I proceeded to pick off the worms -- squishing those I couldn't get off my fingers fast enough. Man, I wish I had my gloves on. ICK! The good news is that I seem to have controlled the problem. Only one worm was found yesterday, compared to the dozens I found last week. I did some research, and all I've been able to do so far is ruled out various species, such as squash borers, cabbage loopers and cankerworms. But I'd really like to know what that worm is. So here's my question... does anyone know what this worm is? Did I just massacre a bunch of future butterflies? 1 CommentsLeave a comment |

Did it look like it had eyeballs on the other side?? I found one that looks like the one in your picture by a devoured plant - CREEPY!! Now I wish I had taken a picture of it. Interestingly enough, I found a kind of "pod" in the lawn near by; almost like a cocoon, but a little different - hard to explain. I swore that that thing fell from outer space - that was the oddest thing I've ever found in my flower beds!
