I checked out the Fall Plant Festival at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center over the weekend and walked away with almost a dozen native plants and a couple of ideas for my own garden. We first walked around the center and stumbled across the butterfly garden. Lately, I've been especially interested in planting for the butterflies, so this was an area I lingered in. There was one spot that had been built up with rocks and soil and other plants. The placard said the rocky outcrop was great for giving butterflies a sunny, dry area to hang out. Hmmmm..... That gives me an idea. That evening, I got to work. About half of my front yard has been turned into a mulched, grass-free zone, but some areas are bare, so I found a nice spot between the two olive trees. I raked the mulch back and asked my husband to pick out some of the limestone rocks we found buried in an ANCIENT water feature that we dug up in the back yard (that's a story for another day), and load it up in the wheelbarrow. I arranged the rocks in a crescent, building up the middle a little higher than the ends, and dumped some soil inside, creating a little slope. Then I planted some of the natives I picked up at the plant sale -- flame acanthus, trailing winecup, and a daisy variety -- all of which attract butterflies or host their larvae. I made another outcrop on the other side. My thought is the rocky areas will give the garden a little much-needed height in those areas in addition to attracting some more butterflies. We should see next spring when the new plants put out some new growth. |
