Today (Labor Day) we're installing an irrigation system (which I will describe in a future post) and mixing the garden soil. We decided to mix our own soil instead of buying it because we wanted to make sure it has enough nutrients for the plants. We also wanted to save a little money. We're using top soil that was piled up when we built our patio in the back. We're lucky that it's nice and dark, but it's also more clay than loam, so we need to lighten it up a bit and make it easier for the vegetables to send out their tender roots. We're planning on adding a good amount of compost to the top soil and some decomposed granite. The granite will add much needed minerals... the compost more nutrients. Both will help loosen the soil. We're also adding phosphate, dried molasses, Texas Greensand and all-purpose fertilizer... all of which were recommended by Howard Garrett, whose books I often look to for Texas organic gardening advice. (You can read more from him on KVUE.com's sister site -- Dallasnews.com) When that's done, we'll be ready to plant... and just in time. I'm hoping the rain will hold off just long enough to get the seedlings into the ground, because they are already late being planted. I'm very curious as to what other Central Texans are doing in their veggie gardens. So, that brings me to my question to those of you reading my blog.... Are you planting a vegetable garden this fall? If so, what are you planting and how are you preparing for it? Write a comment and let me know! |
