Last summer I was complaining that it was so hot and dry I couldn't do anything in the yard.
This year, I'm fighting against the exact opposite. It seems like every single time I have a moment to get out in the yard and work... it rains.
It's just a little frustrating. Really, I shouldn't complain too much. The plants in my yard have never looked better. They are just drinking up all this water.
I have an Eve's Necklace that I planted just a couple of years ago as a tiny little tree (it looked more like an itty-bitty shrub). Now it's taller than my 6'0" husband... in fact, the top leaves are now just beyond his reach -- about 3 times taller than it was in JANUARY.
That's a lot of growing.
I'm hoping that this wet, rainy weather give me a really good pecan crop this year. I have a GIGANTIC pecan tree in my backyard that has had two straight years of pathetic pecans. Last year, the squirrels and dogs snatched all of the pecans up first. (Yep, my dogs eat pecans... they figured out how to chop on the shell and spit out the broken pieces.)
And I'm hoping that the wet soil will give my new veggies a boost once I get them in the ground in a few weeks.
My only worry is that the excessive rain will end up hindering the landscape plants that just went in the ground this spring. Their roots might be hanging around near the surface because we've had so much rain. That means they could be in for a real shock if it ever dries out -- they won't have a deep root system to dig for the water, and it could stress them out until they can develop those roots.
The more immediate danger is drowning. Some plants hate to have wet feet. They need well-drained soil, and with the ground so wet and saturated, they may not be getting that.
Ahhh... we wish for rain and we get downpours. We get downpours and we wish for the sun. This is why I love Texas. It's never a bore.
