« Talk About It: JonBenet Ramsey murder suspect | Main | 9/11 - How do you feel 5 years later? » KEVIN COE: Has he served enough time?August 30, 2006Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna announced that he will seek civil committment for convicted rapist Kevin Coe. This will keep Coe in a secured environment or time beyond his served prison sentence. What do you think about civil committment for Kevin Coe? Write your comments below. Posted by Germain Kirk at August 30, 2006 03:58 PM Trackback PingsTrackBack URL for this entry: CommentsI think Coe should rot in jail for the rapes of those women Posted by: Dave Elmore at August 30, 2006 05:46 PM Kevin Coe should not be allowed out into society, and especially should not be allowed anywhere near the vicinity of Spokane. His victims have had to live with the psychological damage inflicted by him, in addition to the damage he caused for them in relationships, etc. Allowing him out of prison would only be causing more damage and trauma to his victims, not to mention the fear it would bring to any woman who knows anything about his history or his case. He has never been treated for his mental illnesses, nor has he ever accepted responsiblity for the crimes he committed. He should spend the rest of his life locked up. Posted by: Kathy at August 30, 2006 07:18 PM For a man who has never been treated and has never taken responsibility for his crimes, it is a matter of time before Kevin Coe offends again. With serial rapists, the attacks typically get worse with each attack to where the rapist starts to kill his victim. Kevin Coe was getting more violent with each attack prior to being caught. He is more dangerous now then he was before. With recents cases in the news, we should realize that men like this are not rehabilitated. How many families are going to have to lose a loved one until our judicial system does something to stop Kevin Coe and men like him. I was only 7 years old when Kevin was arrested. I remember the sketches that were released to the media when the police were looking for him and the fear that was within the community. I can only imagine what his victims remember and what they are going through knowing that he is set to be released.....probably feeling victimized all over again. I no longer live in Spokane and at this time, I am glad I don't. Posted by: Alaina at August 30, 2006 08:12 PM I hope kevin coe doesnt get released. One of my dearest friends was raped by him. Posted by: Diana Bole at August 31, 2006 01:01 AM Is This for Real? I do believe that Kevin Coe will likely re-offend. I saw part of his interview, he still has a lot of anger in his eyes and in his words. I guess what scares me is not Coe being released back into society, but a civil commitment to keep him in until he is deemed not to be a sexual violent predator. I am worried of Kevin Coe's release, but he has done his time. I just can't wrap my brain around the "Civil Commitment" suit being brought against Mr Coe. If that's all it takes why not use it more often? Everyday I see in the paper or watch a picture pop up on my TV warning me of a Level 3 Sex Offender "very likely to re-offend", being released to walk in society, like he is normal. I question why we have not heard that any of these people "Likely to reoffend" have this possibility looming over their heads? Don't get me wrong, I remember those days when Kevin roamed our streets. I was just as scared as the next woman, you just never knew. I feel for his victims, the live with the pain everyday. I was raped & it was violent, my attacker was never charged. I had nightmares for months. I have since let it go, I am on a new path and am happy with my life. I have also learned to forgive my attacker, life was to difficult holding on to that pain. If my attacker would have been prosecuted & done his 25 years, I would still have forgiven him & hope the system didn't fail him while in jail. What I really want to know is, why every Level 3 sexual offender that is up for probation or release, is not being subjected to a Civil Commitment? This is a very difficult pill for me to swallow. Is there an another motive for making this "Civil Committment" so public? We don't hear about any other violent offenders. Maybe Mr McKenna just got lucky. Wow what timing for Coe to be released. This is a very public case, and anyone that was here during 1981 has a bad taste in their mouth from that time in our history. Just something to think about, why wouldn't Mr McKenna make this case an example of the power he can exude over "violent predators?" Someone should tell all the little victims that are the prey of sexually perverted pedophiles, that the crimes committed against them just weren't violent enough so we let him/her go. They spent their 5 years in jail. We are sorry but those are the rules - those predators have rights too. Posted by: b at August 31, 2006 02:01 AM Is This for Real? He should have been sentenced to a longer term if that is what we wanted. If we tell a person that the cost of their crime(s) is 25 years, and they do that time, we can't add life at the end. It's not fair. I have no feelings of goodwill towards this man.... Posted by: Mark at August 31, 2006 07:47 PM As I sit in my home I can only shudder at the thought of Kevin Coe in jail a mere 6 blocks away. I assumed he would be brought to Spokane at the end of the week for his court hearing next week 9/6. My blood turned to ice when it was announced on the news that he had already arrived around 2:30 this Thursday. Let's hope he is not as good at escaping as Ted Bundy was. Posted by: Shurley at September 1, 2006 12:33 PM well well well what can i say iam absolutely fumeing when i see forums like this iam sick to the pit of my stoumach when people make comments about poor kevin!it makes me feel sick when people are nasty to him and all yous lot on here dont even know him!you can all keep your comments to your self's commenting on a subject you dont know the facts about!grow up the lot of yous- theres a lot worse than kevin out there thats had chances at parole!theyve commited again.its totally unfair that kevin isnt been given a fair chance kev should have the same rights as every body else!hes served his time which was a bit much in the first place i might add!he shouls be let go. Posted by: lynn great britain at September 3, 2006 04:14 PM I am always blind sided by those who believe he should be given another chance. Another chance? What do they mean? A chance to prove that he has learned his lesson by serving 25 years in prison? A chance to prove he now has the will power to overcome his problems and deal with them in a proper way? A chance to live in a neighborhood with your mothers, daughters, wifes and friends? And at whose expense does he fail? At whose expense does he try and try again? And where is he going to work? Will you want him to work in your office? Will you trust him? Afterall, he paid for his crimes. Surely that must account for something. It is hard enough for someone with a DUI to get a good job in this state. Do you believe that he could actually find a job to support himself. That he never again get so angry with those around him that he punishes society for what society is doing to him? When any other animal begins to kill your chickens, you do not remove him from the hen house for punishment, you do it to protect your hens. Everyone has a mother. Would you want your mother to be a victim so that this man can have a chance? Posted by: M. O'Harra at September 5, 2006 09:13 PM What if the civil commitment doesnt go through and hes allowed to go to vegas, how much of his label goes with him. Is it right for him to "start Over" in vegas? why not stop his cruelity to human kind here?instead of making him some one elses problem Posted by: h.hanson at September 6, 2006 08:50 AM he served his time if the courts wanted more time they schould have given it at the time. He may be gultiy but he sereved his time. If the courts can do this to him what can they do to some one with a lesser offence if they wanted. Posted by: Rae Delp at September 6, 2006 09:41 AM These sick people should get one chance and that is it I dont understand why the tax payers have to flip the bill to houses these folks. Kevin Coe had been in trouble before he was convicted of being the serial rapist. Why do these nuts get more rights then there victim's? Why should we still be paying for where he should go? I believe we should be putting the taxs payers money to better use. We need stronger laws on rapist, child molestors and murders. Posted by: annette at September 6, 2006 11:31 AM You who believe he served his time.... Posted by: M at September 6, 2006 12:00 PM For those who whine that Kevin Coe should be given a chance.....well he was been given a chance, many times, while he was in Walla Walla he refused all progeams that are there for sex offenders( Claiming as ever that he was not guilty), failed to attend any parole hearings he was granted by law, and is primed to continue his antisocial behavior whereever he is. If any one is a threat to society, it is Frederick Harlan Coe, with or without his mustache. Posted by: Shurley at September 6, 2006 12:15 PM I am sick to my stomach, knowing the fact that people out there think that Spokane should be "fair" to Kevin Coe. In my opinion he lost all of his rights the first time he touched his first victim!!!!!! He shouldn't have an option on delaying his hearing. He needs to be locked up for good. His victims need that security and comfort knowing that he will never get out. He needs to join his sick mother and rot in H***. There is NO cure for his mental illness, and there never will be. It's time to take care of our city and get rid of what will hurt it. He should have been given the chair as far as I am concerned. With as many victims that he has had, and the fact that he doesn't think that he has a problem is a sure sign that he will never change, and he will do it again. My heart and prayers go out to the victims. Kevin, may you get whats coming to you!!! Whether it be here or in another city, your time will come to really pay for what you've done. Posted by: CEP at September 6, 2006 12:51 PM Why should someone who refused to take part in any of the rehab programs in prison get out. It's very clear what his intensions are. He never said he did anything wrong or is sorry. What about his victims. Why do the abuser's have more rights than the victims. Put him away! Posted by: Lisa at September 6, 2006 01:14 PM There are dozens of crimes where the parolee is likely to re-offend. How come there is no civil commitment program for them. Kevin Coe is like any other criminal who has served his time. He should be free to go. Posted by: 8ballsgone at September 6, 2006 01:38 PM Coe's commitment trial is not about his crimes. It is about whether or not he is a threat to society. His conviction and records of behavior are evidence. This is not an extension of his prison sentence. It is a legal process to determine whether he is likely to bring harm to himself or others. In the old days, someone could have you committed by signing a form and delivering you to a mental illness facility. Laws have changed and to get a person committed, you must go through a legal process refered to as a civil commitment hearing. He will at that time be represented by a lawyer and have the same rights as you or I to prove that he is not a threat to society and that he need not be committed. In the event there is more evidence to support that he will likely be a threat to socienty, having gone through the legal process and formally deamed a threat, he would be committed. Just as any citizen can be committed, so can he. This is not about his previous trial, his previous sentence or the fact that he has served time for his crimes. This is about the rights of society. This is about the rights of those who can potentially be victimized by a person whom is known as a threat. This is about your safety and mine. Posted by: M at September 6, 2006 02:14 PM Boy, there are some who say he should be set free and most say he should remain locked up and rot in hell. Did he do his time? Yes. Did the 25 years that he was locked away from society do any good for him? More than likely not since he did nothing address why he was in prison in the first place or acknowledge the horrid crimes that he committed against women in our community. The fear that all Spokanites felt during those dark days (prior to him finally being captured, tried and CONVICTED by a jury) is something that we Spokanites should not have to endure a second time. Is it moral to keep a person locked away from society after the person has served the sentence imposed? ABSOLUTLY if the there is the threat of any more women/persons have to go through what his victims went through back in the early 80's and the mental scares that they carry to this day. If I were the one to decide whether to keep Coe locked up to protect our society, I would not hesitate one bit and then throw the key away. Posted by: JS at September 6, 2006 02:14 PM No matter what you or I may think about kevin Coe, he was sentenced to 25 years and he did his time, he should be let out but with a lot of supervision!! How can we constitutionally do this to any person in our country? Posted by: Carol at September 6, 2006 03:01 PM How can we constitutionally do this to any person in our country? To answer your question..... it is constitutional. Posted by: M at September 6, 2006 03:06 PM Setting all emotions and anger aside for my post to this discussion,we live in a country where the law of the land is enforced, whilst Coe is a rapist and has not shown remorse for his crime we have to go by the law and he has served his time and should be let out,i dont want him out personally but the judge and jury gave him 25 years and that is up,we are constantly shown child perverts on the news day in day out but i do not see the coverage for them that Coe has presently, they are left to wander around Spokane and are forgotten once they have been on the news,i see alot of talk about Coe,how he is a threat to Spokane,so are the thousands of child abusers that walk our streets,i think this is a more important issue to concentrate on,everyone will know who Coe is as soon as they look at him,can anyone say the same about the peoples pictures on the news every week who are sex offenders mostly against childrfen,i doubt it. Posted by: Ian at September 6, 2006 06:42 PM Again.....He is getting out. He served his time and is not going to serve any more time for his crimes.... Posted by: M at September 6, 2006 07:39 PM I remember when the South Hill Rapist case was ongoing and I was terrified! When he was finally caught I have never seen anyone as arrogant as Kevin Coe. He refuses to accept responsibility so refuses treatment because he's "innocent". Let's hope the prosecutor can keep him "put away". I want to feel safe like I have the last 25 years. I always found it interesting that as soon as he was off the streets the attacks stopped. He wasn't trying to "help" the police department catch the criminal but disguise himself from being recognized as the criminal. Thank goodness for good criminal investigators! Posted by: CB at September 6, 2006 10:52 PM Now the question...has he served enough time? How much time is enough time to pay for the lives he altered? The number of his victims is overwhelming. There were the women he raped...he took their dignity, innocense, their sense of self and security. He caused their lives to changes in ways that only those who fell victim to him can understand. Then there were the husbands, the fathers and the loved ones who lost the women they once knew. Gone forever. Some held on and weathered the storms together and others gave up as the inability to cope became too overwhelming. Then there were the bystanders, the victims who lost their sense of freedom during Coes reign of terror. If you lived in Spokane during the "South Hill Rapist" saga, you lost something or someone. We all did. How much time does it take to make that all seem paid for...??? Is there enough time? We all pay for our mistakes in one way or another. What this man did was not a mistake. He did not forget to stop at the store on the way home and pick up milk. He planned his attacks. He made sure he would be able to get away with his crimes by changing his patterns, his looks and even his approach. As for the law and the time he spent in prison, that was for the one conviction they were able to make stick. He was never brought up on charges for the numerous women he did victimize. He is mentally ill....he is sick and he needs to be kept in a place where he cannot hurt any one else ever again. Hasn't he done enough damage and caused enough pain?
