11:17 AM Sat, May 23, 2009 |

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- Nebraska on Friday threw out thousands of votes -- online votes for its new license plate -- after discovering that a minimalist approach initially won only because a humor Web site had urged people to choose the most boring design.

Department of Motor Vehicles Director Beverly Neth announced Friday that a white, gold and black plate featuring the state bird and state flower -- the western meadowlark and gol...

Mayor cuts grass himself in city park

1:06 PM Mon, May 18, 2009 |

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) -- An Ohio mayor is asking residents to grab a mower and help him cut the grass in city parks.

Budget cuts mean Toledo has hired fewer seasonal workers to keep its parks tidy, so Mayor Carty Finkbeiner (FINK'-by-nur) was out with a mower doing the job Saturday at a park near his home. About 10 city administrative employees joined him, on their own time.

Finkbeiner says he plans to spend the next sever...

Fruit fanatics pay more than $5,000 for a melon

10:26 PM Fri, May 15, 2009 |

TOKYO (AP) -- The latest victim of Japan's recession is round, sweet and famous for being shockingly expensive.

The first two Yubari melons of the season were auctioned Friday in northern Japan and fetched 500,000 yen ($5,200). Pricey? Certainly. But it's practically a steal if you consider last year's winning bid -- a record 2.5 million yen, or about $26,000. In 2007 they sold for 2 million yen.

It appears the world's...
