Mambo Italiano: Dancing With The Stars

4:03 PM Mon, Feb 23, 2009 |
Vickie Newton

My dancing shoes hit the floor Saturday night to raise money for the Independence Center. The Independence Center offers programs and services to adults in the St. Louis metropolitan area with "serious and persistent mental illnesses to live and work in the community, independently and with dignity".

For several months, I practiced my salsa routine with instructor and dance partner, Alex. Alex is one of the instructors at Just Dancin' in Des Peres. And, he can dance!!!
The 'Dancing With The Stars' competition worked just like the real one. Professional dancers paired with amateurs.

The hard work paid off! Alex and I were voted the judges' favorites, winning with a 5, 5, 5, and a 4. But another couple , Dick Schul of Emerson Electric and his partner Angie, won the overall competition...which was decided on the judges' score AND the number of votes purchased by the couple's friends. Kim Tucci of Pasta House fame and his dance partner, Stephanie, were second...followed by Alex and me.

Bottom line: it was a terrific evening! We raised a lot of money for Independence Center, and I finally learned how to salsa.

Take a look at some of the practice video and a few pictures from the competition.

I went on KMOV.COM this morning and saw photos of the dancing competition you participated in for the the Independence Center. All I can say is you and your partner Alex looked HOT!!!! doing the Salsa. Who knew that St. Louis' sweet little demure Vickie Newton could strut her stuff so well! You and Alex certainly made it look like fun! Just wanted to give you both well deserved kudos for entering the competition and coming out with honorable mention . And by the way, Congratulations on your recent marriage...hope it lasts forever...you deserve it! Best Regards!

Hello Vicky,
Congrats on your marriage. May God bless you and your husband for many years to come.
How can President Obama help the country when the House and the Senate cut his throat at every hand? He submits a package that will help the little people and they chop it up to fit their needs and as usual we get the scraps. Sen. John McCain said" I thought we were going to get change". Okay you evil man, listen up if you and ALL of your croanies, from the House to the Senate would cut your salaries in half and took a cap on your retirement and then gave that money to your respective states towards jobs, schools, teachers salaries, police/firedepartments then maybe you could have something to say. Until then the House and the Senate need to WORK WITH PRESIDENT OBAMA AND STOP CHANGING HIS PLAN FOR YOUR OWN GAINES.
Sorry for the long blog, but it needed to be said.
Susan
