Financial Crisis Creeping Into Sports

7:38 PM Tue, Nov 25, 2008 |
Tim Klusarits

Three things that have caught my eye in the past 24 hours have made it very clear that times are a changing in the sports world.

Item #1-Tiger Woods and GM have parted ways due to the financial crisis. GM just couldn't justify paying someone seven million dollars to endorse their product which in this case was Buick. If you can't pay the most recgonizable athlete in the world to push a bad car line you ARE in trouble as a company. >> Continue reading: Financial Crisis Creeping Into Sports

Four Local Teams Still Alive

9:43 PM Sat, Nov 22, 2008 |
Todd Schumacher

My predictions were pretty close to the mark for the semi-final round in prep football playoffs. My record was 6-3 on tabbing the winners.

East St. Louis continues to pass progressively tougher tests. They got past a very solid Glenbard West team, and are showing they could be the cream of the crop in Illinois Class 7A. The Flyers now meet Geneva, who they beat in the quarterfinals last season.

Hazelwood Central and East pro...

Haslett says Bulger is starter for next 2 years

5:40 PM Thu, Nov 20, 2008 |
Doug Vaughn

Rams head coach Jim Haslett says Marc Bulger will be the Rams starting quarterback for the rest of this year year, next year and most likely 2010 as well. Regardless of how he plays. Bulger signed a huge contract that could be worth as much as $65 million, and the Rams would take a big hit to their salary cap if he were to be traded. Haslett says it wouldn't make much sense to acquire another highly paid quarterback to become the starter, and ...

The Dome Problem

7:21 PM Wed, Nov 19, 2008 |
Tim Klusarits

Today was the first serious sign to everyone in St. Louis about the future of sports in this town. When the NCAA announced that the city did not receive a Final Four bid it should have sent a very serious and loud message to everyone in this town....the Dome is not good enough going forward for major sporting events and in turn is not going to be good enough going forward for the professional football team.

I know that this country a...

Finally Some Positive Sports News

8:15 PM Tue, Nov 18, 2008 |
Tim Klusarits

It is nice to have a little bit of positive news on the St. Louis sports scene in the past two days after having a miserable fall and what looks like a miserable winter. The first big thing was the obvious of Albert Pujols winning the MVP award on Monday. Today we found out that he is now also teaming up with Jeff Cooper and St. Louis Soccer United in the attempt to bring an MLS team to St. Louis.

I am the resident soccer guy in...

Illinois Prep Football Breakdown and Predictions

11:55 AM Tue, Nov 18, 2008 |
Todd Schumacher

Here's my Metro East breakdown on Illinois schools in the title state championship mix.

Class 7A:

East St. Louis is one of the most exciting teams to watch in the St. Louis area. They saved the best for last. Their final home game against St. Rita was an instant classic. Down 28-7 in the third quarter, the Flyers roared back, almost single-handily by Terry Hawthorne, and topped the #3 Mustangs 35-28. Eastside also ha...

Pujols Wins But Should He?

3:06 PM Mon, Nov 17, 2008 |
Tim Klusarits

Albert Pujols won the MVP vote today by the BBWAA over Ryan Howard by a decent margin this afternoon. I thought the vote was actually going to go the other way heading into today and I was mildly surprised that Pujols won the award. It is not that Pujols did not have a great season because he certainly did. Why it surprised me was that Howard's team made the playoffs and Pujols' team did not and when two players are somewhat even then i...

Missouri State Football Breakdown and Predictions

12:53 PM Mon, Nov 17, 2008 |
Todd Schumacher

It may be either a lean or ugly (or both) championship weekend at the Dome for the state football championships. I'll preface this by saying, I wish all the local teams luck. But my gut feeling says it's going to be a tough road to get there, or the red carpet won't be rolled out for them once they do.

Class 6:

Fox has been a great story this year. Third-year coach Nick Gianino has guided the Warriors to the highest peak tha...

Baseball salary talk is making me ill

6:29 PM Fri, Nov 14, 2008 |
Doug Vaughn

To hear about major league baseball teams offering record breaking contracts to free agents makes me a little bit ill. How is it that the rest of the American economy is in the tank, and the Yankees can still offer CC Sabathia more than 137 million dollars? I understand the concept of supply and demand, and I'm all for capitalism. But these baseball salaries are hard to stomach. Everyday we read about another major corporation laying off hundr...

Was it crazy to fire Mad Mike?

11:18 AM Thu, Nov 13, 2008 |
Doug Vaughn

When Mike Martz was fired by the Rams after the 2005 season, it really didn't take too many people by surprise. Martz lost a power struggle with Jay Zygmunt, and was often criticized for his game day management. IHis personality seemed to change after the Super Bowl loss to New England. It sure seemed like it was time for him to go. But look what's happned to the Rams since he left. The Rams were 56-36 under Martz. They've gone 17-35 since he ...

Sports and Politics

7:24 PM Mon, Nov 03, 2008 |
Tim Klusarits

I think I speak for a great number of Americans in saying I can not wait for the election to be over. I am just tired of hearing about it. Everything that can be said has been said over and over and over again. One of the main reasons I want the election to be over is because I want sports to return back to being sports instead of campaign appearances.

I don't need to see the two candidates tonight on Monday Night Football. I ...

For Mizzou, Cotton Could Be King Again

6:31 PM Mon, Nov 03, 2008 |
Todd Schumacher

The Tigers escaped Waco, Texas this weekend with a three point win over Baylor, and further solidified the fact that their holiday season won't be basked in the lime light of a BCS bowl berth. At this point, Gary Pinkel and company should be happy playing on January 2 in the Cotton Bowl.

It's so hard to tell what Mizzou team is going to come play each week. Two Saturdays ago they had over double the total yards as Colorado; thumpin...
