July 2008 ArchivesThe trading deadline has come and gone and the Cardinals have not made a deal for a bat, a closer or a left handed relief pitcher. With the exception of the Manny Ramirez deal it was a pretty quiet trade deadline. So now the big question, if you can get past all the screaming by Cardinals fans this afternoon, is where does this team go from here? There have been a couple developments in the past 48 hours that make things not look s... Baseball has always been a game of numbers. They are a good indicator of what will happen. It is a matter of probability. How many times a batter is going to get a hit. How many times a pitcher is going to get an out or how many runs he will give up in a game. It is the backbone of the game. After beating the Braves tonight the Cardinals have just 52 games remaining in the season. I crunched some numbers tonight to determine if th... I'll probably be bashed for being a whiny media guy but I have to get something off my chest. I hate when the trade deadline rolls around in any sport and specifically baseball. It isn't because the GM's and management types either say nothing or totally mislead you on what their respective team is going to do. I understand that because we are a conduit of information they sometimes want us to put out bad information for their own dealing... Count me in the camp of those yawning about Steven Jackson not being in camp and holding out for a better contract. I understand that Jackson is not the most beloved athlete to ever play in St. Louis, and this wrankles those fans, but in reality it is not detrimental to the team to not have him there. The story might change for me if we are a month from now and he still isn't in camp but it is more important now for everyone to be on the s...

10:30 ... Rams Camp ... First day of camp and everyone seems anxious to ... This has got to be the end for the Cardinals doesn't it? How in the world can the Cardinals have their throats stepped on for four straight by the Brewers and still salvage their season. It is not too much to say that this series has a very high probablilty of being a season killer. The bullpen is a complete mess and if John Mozeliak doesn't want to do something about the bullpen then the Cardinals should be sellers now at the trade...
1 p.m. and there are more media milling about but still no players. The ...
Tony La Russa raised a lot of eyebrows last night when he went after Derrick Goold of the Post-Dispatch for asking about the bullpen. Tony tried to spread the blame around about the Cardinals woes by saying the offense isn't doing enough either in the first two games. It appears it will be a third straight game they haven't produced by the end of the night. A lot of people seem to think that Tony is oblivious to the biggest problem o... Alright since Tony got the memo from my blog last night about Chris Duncan I figure I might as well push my luck and make my suggestions on what to do about the bullpen situation in general and more importantly the closer situation. The Cardinals are obviously being mentioned in trade talks for relief pitchers and the names that have been popping up are George Sherill (Baltimore), Huston Street (Oakland) and Eddie Guardado (Texas). ... Tony La Russa has to stop it with putting Chris Duncan in the starting lineup. I have watched Tony this season punch the right buttons night after night but tonight is the reason you don't have Chris Duncan in the starting lineup in what is arguably your biggest series of the season. Duncan single handedly was the rally killer in Game One of this series. In the first inning after the Troy Glaus 2 RBI double he stranded Glaus on sec... Monday night begins the biggest series of the season for the Cardinals when the Milwaukee Brewers come to town for a 4 game series. If you look at the Wild Card Standings that should tell you just how important the series is. Right now the Cardinals sit one game ahead. If things go unbelievably well they could have the Brewers sitting 5 games back by Thursday evening. That is highly unlikely. When you breakdown the series the key to t... The Cardinals start the second half of the season and I am just as perplexed about where they are headed as I was on opening day. When the season began I thought that this was no better than a 75 win team. Now on July 17th 75 wins would be a huge disappointment. The problem is even though the Cardinals currently sit in the Wild Card spot I still do not have a good feeling about this season. Nor do I believe that they will be good enough... If you stayed up long enough last night, or should I say early this morning, you would have seen that J.D. Drew won the All-Star Game MVP Award. It was certainly justified. He had the best night offensively of any player on the American League squad. To be honest even though I was only half awake for the presentation from Bud Selig it made me nauseous because it just shows how great a player he could have been and how great he could have... Sad news on the St. Louis sports scene today as former Steamers/Storm and Ambush goalie Slobo Ilijevski died today from an injury suffered in a soccer game over the weekend. He was only 58 years old. It is not too much to overstate things when I say that Slobo is one of the five most influential soccer players to have ever been in the area. On top of being a great goalkeeper he ran a tremendous amount of youth camps in the area ... News came down from the Tiffany Network today that CBS College Basketball analyst Billy Packer will not be back with CBS next year and for the first time in 35 years he will not be calling the Final Four on television. I say good riddance. It wasn't that he was abrasive on the air. There are lots of people who have been that through the years on TV and radio. Howard Cosell was one of those types. It was that not only was he abrasvive... So what would you do? One of the greatest quarterbacks in all time leaves you. Says he is done. He has hinted at this before, several times before as a matter of fact, but didn't really do it till this spring. You have had to have a Plan B but haven't had to use it for two seasons. Finally your star says that's it and you begin on Plan B. The star calls you in late spring and says he has a change of heart. You decide that even thoug... 13 Million Dollars and Zero Wins. That is a pretty sad and damning stat. That is the output the Cardinals have got from Mark Mulder over the past two years. Today the Mulder era if not officially over is darn close. The Cardinals have placed Mulder on the DL and called up Jamie Garcia. What happened last night in Philadelphia didn't shock me. What has since that moment he walked off the mound has. I am surprised by the anger ... I know it is only July 9th but tonight is one of those nights where I am ready to start seeing some football. For me baseball is a love but football is my passion. The Cardinals story really hasn't changed over the past few weeks so maybe that is what is partially driving this but I am ready to see if the Rams are going to resurrect themselves in this town. I want to see if Chris Long is going to be the real deal. I want to see if Marc B... The Cardinals just shockingly shutout the Phillies tonight, winning 2-0. Shocking may be an understatement. The Cardinals were facing the Phillies best pitcher this evening in Cole Hamels. They didn't exactly tear the cover off the ball but they got enough to win. Joel Piniero hasn't won a game since April 29th and pitched poorly in his past two starts. Figuring that they were playing the game in the launching pad known as Ci... Breaking News from Chicago in the past few minutes. The Cubs have just made a trade with the Oakland A's. The Cubs receive Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin for Matt Murton, Sean Gallagher, Eric Patterson and a minor leaguer. On the surface this is a great trade for the Cubs. Rich Harden is having a terrific season with a 5-1 record with a 2.34 ERA. Gaudin is also a good reliever with a 3.59 ERA. The Cubs pitching staff which has b... It seems that Cardinals Nation is in full panic mode today. First the Cardinals drop a weekend series to the Cubs and were within a whisker of being swept. Next word comes out that Mark Mulder is going to start a game for the Cardinals this week in Philadelphia of all places. Then the biggest news came from the Brewers who completed a deal for Cy Young Award winner CC Sabathia. The question now becomes is it right for Cardinals fans to ... Friday night brings the return of Jim Edmonds to Busch Stadium. There seems to be a lot of conversation about whether or not Edmonds will be cheered when he comes to bat. Are you kidding me? This town cheers for a sacrifice bunt to move a runner over. They will certainly cheer for Jim Edmonds. If he isn't then it will be a huge injustice. Jim Edmonds is the greatest centerfielder in St. Louis Cardinals history. Period. Th... From the who didn't see this one coming department Brett Favre is getting the itch to play again according to a report this afternoon from ESPN. Was there anyone out there who didn't think something like this was going to happen? The guy loves to play football. He was one game away from the Super Bowl last season. He was still a productive player and he has been playing the retirement card for the last 5 seasons. There was no way we ... Today is the opening of free-agency in the NHL. It is clear from the spending frenzy today that no one in the league has learned anything from the lockout of 2004-05. Here is just a sampling of some of the deals completed today. Brian Campbell-8 Yrs-57 Million No offense to any... |
