Stan Musial Day

4:37 PM Mon, May 19, 2008 |

There are certain moments that happen in life when you realize at that moment that this is something that you will remember for a very long time. I have a feeling, like a lot of Cardinals fans, that yesterday was a very special moment that won't be forgotten by anyone for a long time.

The Cardinals honored Stan Musial on the 50th anniversary of his 3000th hit and it was something that you just can't quite put into words. There is no question that Stan Musial is the greatest Cardinals player ever. He didn't need the adulation of fans yesterday to tell him that. I think though the fans and the organization wanted to say Thank You for everything he has done for the franchise.

Not to be too sad or syrupy but the reality is that Stan is not doing so well these days at 87 and doesn't quite get around like he used too. Yesterday may have been his goodbye to the Cardinals fans. I am not nearly a talented enough writer to condense all of his accomplishments or laud how great of a man he is but I will say without question he is one of the 5 most impressive athletes I have ever met in my life. Someone who you can't say a bad word about. Someone who you would be proud representing your team and your city. For 60+ years The Man has done that.

Yesterday's tribute was very special. Let's hope that Stan can make it to the All-Star Game next year where he can receive the national acclaim and one more big hug from the fans that he so richly deserves.

Stan Musial was my idol in baseball.
He is the alpha and omega of baseball in my mind.

About 25 years ago, I had an optical shop at the Ballas Medical Office Center. One morning I was standing at my door, which was right near the steps. Stan Musial came in the door and was walking up the steps. I was in awe, but the only thing I could say was "Hi Stan".

He looked over at me and answered, "Hi Kid". I was about 40 years old at time, but felt like a little kid, because my hero talked to me.

What a thrill!

My husband and I were lucky enough to attend Sunday's game. We had great seats down from first base. Seeing Stan enter the stadium riding in the cart was breathtaking! There was such an aura hovering over the stadium everyone in attendance was silenced for a moment. Then everyone rose to their feet and clapped nonstop. The hair on my arms stood straight up, and I fought back tears seeing Stan Musial so up close and personal. I will never forget that moment. I thank the Cardinals' organization for making that day possible.

I remember Stan as the man who made baseball a true game with sportsmanship as the epitome of accomplischment. I would go to Crosley Field in Cincinnati every Sunday that Stan was there to see him play. He inspired me to my success in life. I met him many years later and he invited me to help him as he autographed bats in Orlando, what a thrill. In my professional enginering career I have known all the seven original astronauts, the moon landing austronauts and other famous people but never have any been so life influencing to me as Stan The Man. Stan is a True American with a quite pride and dignity that is an example for everyone who wants success with dignity. Stan I wish you health and happiness. Thanks for being The Man.
