May 2008 ArchivesOn my final day of the work week I have some odds and ends from the baseball world that have been rattling around my head so here they are..... The All-Star voting has begun and the name Ryan Ludwick is being thrown around as a possible All-Star. His first half has been fantastic and he is certainly worthy of being in the mix. That being said it will be a long shot at best for him to be on the All-Star roster. Here is a list of gu... Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals is finally on a channel tonight that everyone in the country actually can see (not that we condone which channel it is on). You would think that the NHL would do everything in its power to make sure that their entire championship would be on network TV but they can't get that done. That being said you would think that they would at least go all out to make sure they created a lot of buzz before tonight's ga... When the lineup came out tonight for the Cardinals game there was an audible groan from certain members of the sports department. OK from almost the entire sports department. Ryan Ludwick wasn't in the starting lineup tonight. Why in the world was Ryan Ludwick not in the lineup? There doesn't seem to be a logical reason to it. There is no question in my mind that Ludwick should have been in. He is hot and none of the numbers ... The Memorial Day weekend is traditionally a time for baseball teams to take a self-analysis and determine exactly what kind of team they have. The Cardinals have completed almost one-third of their schedule now and show no signs of weakening. They surprised everybody with their performance the few weeks of the season, but at this point it seems safe to say the Cardinals are for real. They continue to get solid, and at times spectacular, starti... How is it possible that the St. Louis Cardinals aren't playing on Memorial Day? Most of the country is off today and I am sure a majority of St. Louisians would like to be enjoying a BBQ and a ballgame today. First it makes business sense to have every major league team playing somewhere today. Everyone is off and it is a time to showcase your product. Second in a game that wraps itself in the flag at every opportunity they can why woul... There is a report out tonight that Major League Baseball is considering using instant replay on a testing basis this October in the Arizona Fall League. This comes after a horrible week for umpiring in which there was a home run taken off the board for Carlos Delgado on the primetime game Sunday night at Yankees Stadium. Then on Tuesday Geovani Soto for the Cubs had one taken away from him on Tuesday at Minute Maid Park. Followed up with ... I don't know which was more amazing to me tonight. Albert Pujols single handedly knocking out both the pitcher and catcher in a matter of one inning or the Spurs blowing a 20 point lead in the playoffs. You have to hope that Chris Young is alright. He has already been diagnosed with a broken nose and you would have to think he is headed for the DL for awhile. Young is a big target at 6-10 so you hope that he gets healthy and isn'... I know that since we are in St. Louis the NBA is an afterthought but I will tell you for me this year's playoffs have probably been the most interesting to me since the mid-90's. I haven't been able to put my finger on why this year is different. I think a part of it is that the level of play is reminiscent of the way the playoffs used to be. Each game has been played at such an intensity that you can tell that the players are 100% givin... The panic has definitely set in around town on the possibility of the Rams being sold and moving back to Los Angeles. Since the Rams moved to town that has always been a concern deep in the back of my head that they would somehow move back to LA. That being said we are still about 900 steps away from that happening so everyone just needs to settle down on that. What is of real concern though for the long term future of football in ... There are certain moments that happen in life when you realize at that moment that this is something that you will remember for a very long time. I have a feeling, like a lot of Cardinals fans, that yesterday was a very special moment that won't be forgotten by anyone for a long time. The Cardinals honored Stan Musial on the 50th anniversary of his 3000th hit and it was something that you just can't quite put into words. There is n... The Tampa Bay Rays by all rights should have swept the Cardinals this weekend. But somehow, someway the Cardinals continue to win games. Sunday's game is a perfect example of why what the Cardinals are doing makes no sense. How does a team leave 16 runners on base and win a game? It doesn't happen often and yet the Cardinals did it. How does a team blow a 4 run lead twice in a game and still win? It doesn't happen often and ... We all know what happened with Isringhausen today but here is where things are getting interesting on what the Cardinals next move is. Tonight in Memphis the AAA affiliate of the Cardinals, the Redbirds, were in a save situation in the 8th and 9th inning and they did not use their closer Chris Perez. Not only did the Redbirds blow the save in both of those innings but now they are in the 12th and have used 7 pitchers and still have not used... After watching Jason Isringhausen blow Thursday's game it is now crystal clear what the Cardinals have to do. They are no longer afforded the luxury of keeping Isringhausen on the roster and nursing him along through his problems. The Cardinals need to DL him before tomorrow's game against the Rays and bring up someone who can help the team win now. There are two main reasons. First it is clear Isringhausen is not right physically... By Thursday morning Jim Edmonds will be a Chicago Cubs outfielder. I don't know how much he has left in the tank but it seems to me the risk is worth it. They have a young outfielder in Felix Pie who is not producing and overmatched. If the Cubs can platoon Edmonds with Reed Johnson in an effective manner it seems like it could possibly work. What I am surprised about is not the move but the reaction of some Cardinal fans who are... The Cardinals are going thru their first rough patch of the season having now lost 6 of their last 7 games, and three in a row. Last night's game against the Pirates was a microcosm of the Cardinal team we were afraid we would be getting for 2008; the starting pitching wasn't very good, the bullpen was shaky, and the team didn't score any runs that weren't driven in by homeruns. Timely hitting has been a problem in recent games. The Cardinals ... There was a little bit of scuttlebutt before the season that the Cardinals might be interested in signing Barry Bonds. Tony La Russa even went as far as saying he would be in favor of it. Luckily cooler heads prevailed over at Busch and said that was not a good idea. Forget that Bonds is a clubhouse cancer. Forget he can't field a lick. Tonight is the reason you don't sign Barry Bonds. Here is what came across the AP wire ... On Tuesday Matt Walsh the former Patriots video coordinator will finally have his meeting with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. The NFL has gotten the tapes and has reviewed them. From what has been released the tapes aren't too damning of the Patriots. Barring anything unforseen in the meeting tomorrow or the subsequent meeting with Arlen Specter in D.C. the incident will probably be put to an end. There is something though that ... A tough loss for the Cardinals on Sunday in a game that could have been won. It is not very often you say this but Albert Pujols really cost the Cardinals big today. You don't usually say that about someone who is the leading candidate to win the MVP but his baserunning was horrendous today to say the least. His first offense was being picked off by Jeff Suppan in the first inning. There is no reason that Albert should have been... Is Tony La Russa the only one who can't see that Jason Isringhausen shouldn't be used in the closer role right now? How many games does he have to blow before La Russa makes a change? Is this season all about Isringhausen, his stats and his feelings, or is it about the team winning? He now has 5 blown saves and 4 losses. If he were having just an ordinary year, the Cardinals would be 5 or 6 games ahead of the pack right now. I've been as big a... How long will the Cardinals go with Jason Isringhausen as the closer? That's a question Tony La Russa has to be asking himself. It appears the Cards will be a legitimate contending team this year, but they can't afford to keep giving away games in the late innings. Izzy has 4 blown saves and a loss now. If he were pitching as well as he did last year the Cardinals would be 5 or 6 games ahead of the pack in the Central Division by now. Rick Ankiel's throws from centerfield to nail two Colorado Rockies baserunners begs the question as to whether Ankiel has the strongest arm in the history of Cardinal baseball. My memory goes back to the early 60's, so if I slight any players who wore the Birds on bat before that time I apologize. Clearly Ankiel's outfield arm is the strongest we've seen in recent years. His two throws in Colorado even left his teammates wide-eyed in ... I was watching the Kentucky Derby live, as I try to do every year, and was watching the celebration of Big Brown when the cameras panned off to a horse lying on the ground and I said to my wife that is probably the end of one horse. I have witnessed enough horse racing to know that whichever horse that was, it was most likely the end of that horse's life. As it turned out it was the runner-up Eight Belles who unfortunately broke bo... Another day and another allegation involving Roger Clemens and the "other woman." As it turns it out, surprise surprise, there are numerous "other women" out there in Clemens life. We have stayed away from this ongoing story on the TV side of things but all of this just makes you shake your head. It is not the fact that Clemens was using performance enhancing drugs. Most everyone in the inner circles of sports have suspected super... |
