April 2008 ArchivesI know it is April 30th but two stories crossed the wire today that got me fired up about college football. These two stories are everything that is wrong with the sport. The first story had to do with the BCS which has decided that not only will the system not make a 4 team playoff but it will remain exactly the same through 2014. Why don't the powers that be understand that a playoff is what the sport needs. They will make a TON of m... I always laugh that the instant the NFL draft ends there are already grades out on how teams fared. Even the Mel Kiper's of the world can't honestly assess what just happened in that quick of a timeframe. The reality is you really don't begin to know what you got till they put on the pads in the summer. Beyond that to really grade a draft you need a good 3 years to be fair and honest. That being said I was still curious to see what was ... All signs are currently pointing towards the Rams taking Glenn Dorsey with the second pick overall. Outside of the obvious injury questions let me add another problem with taking a defensive tackle in the top 5. Over the past 20 years of the NFL Draft there have been 7 defensive tackles that have been selected in the top 5 picks. Only one, Cortez Kennedy SEA-1990, had what you would consider a pro-bowl year in and year out career. ... I love the week before the draft. Everyone, and I do mean everyone, is lying about who they are targeting regarding their team. That being said it seems that the picture is becoming clearer on what is going to happen with the number one pick. It appears that the Dolphins are going to be taking Jake Long (OT Michigan) with that first pick. So now the Rams appear to about to be on the clock. The intrigue now becomes who the Rams pic... When the NFL schedule came out this afternoon the exctiement of getting a little football fix was quickly replaced with dread as word came about what schedule the Rams were dealt. The Rams have to have the most difficult first 7 games of the season of any team in the league. Couple that with coming off a 3-13 season and a coach on the hot seat and this adds up to what could be a disastrous 2008 season. The season starts in Philadel... I think if anyone had told you 2 weeks ago that by the time the Cardinals take the field on tax day that they would be 9-4 you would have thought that person was nuts. But when the Cardinals take the field against the Brewers on Tuesday they will be in first place and have the best record in the NL Central. How has this happened? There are three factors to me that have made the difference. First they have gotten surprisingly good... Well I was halfway right on the Final Four. I had North Carolina and UCLA in and did not choose Memphis and Kansas (thanks Texas and Georgetown). It isn't a great surprise that the Tigers and Jayhawks made it to San Antonio but what is surprising is that all 4 number one seeds made it this far. That is shocking to me. Looking at the semifinals it really is a tossup to who will win the title. All four teams bring different elemen... |
