The NWA song, "F The Police," is 20 years old and it still is making news. 5 CommentsLeave a comment |

I recall there was an incident at one of the St. Charles high schools a few years ago. It involved a halftime show "salute to the 60s" with the band was to play Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit", until parents complained about the song's drug references.
Let's not confuse groundbreaking and influential with attention grabbing. Throwing around four letter words in a very public arena does get attention, but just what did this "song" ever prove. That people can be offended? I think we knew that long before these guys came along.
Without knowing the context of the lesson I can't speak to whether using this in a classroom was appropriate or not, but I think they accomplished what they intended by releasing this "song" in the first place - they got their 15 minutes of fame, and probably a few dollars as well.
Having the right to free speech does NOT make speaking obscene language right ANYWHERE, ESPECIALLY in the classroom. If someone incites to riot, this has been judicially determined to NOT be protected speech. By implying that it is OK to attack the police, this also crosses the line into speech that is NOT protected by the First Amendment.
This teacher should be fired.
This is indicative of a very repulsive aspect of our society. Words mean things, for good or for evil. The immoral use of obscenities is a lazy excuse for not being able to express oneself without cursing someone or something. The use of profanity has become so commonplace in our society that our culture has become substantially corrupted. Commensurate with using curse words is an abandonment of common courtesy, having degenerated to a total lack of respect for anyone, including the curser, especially among our youth. This reveals a seething anger that underlies such obscene speech and such disrespect. Mean language erupts from mean people, and thus we have abased ourselves into a mean society.
I was valedictorian of the school last year and had this teacher in a class. The teacher is one of the better ones in the school for making students think critically--we listened to songs with curses last year too. Really, they are just words...honestly, you hear worse in the lunchroom everyday.
Also, the class in question was a dual-credit college class with SLU. SLU should stand up and defend this teacher for actually trying to get her students to think critically.
I think that this whole thing has been taken out of propotion. They do not have all the facts. They make her seem like such a bad teacher who is trying to corrupt us, which is not the case.
Yes, if you hear that a teacher played “F*** the Police” just because, it would definintly be a problem but that was not the case. The song went along with an article in our COLLEGE books, so she played it. She told all of us on the first day of class that the content of this class is college level, so if you can not handle it you should transfer out.
When she left we were in the process of starting to type a paper, which now we really can’t because she is gone and all the subs do not exactly now what we were suppose to do. So now we are stuck. And if the teacher gets fired what are we suppose to do? Do we still get our college credit, which we are paying for? Do we get a qualified teacher for this class?
I bet that no one would be bashing her if they knew the whole story, but I guess that is life.
