Illinois Budget Cuts Hitting Home

9:33 PM Fri, Jul 31, 2009 |

After months of disagreement over the state budget in Illinois, lawmakers passed an unusual budget about two weeks ago. It was unusual because it gave the governor most of the decision making authority. Typically, your lawmakers would go over the budget line-by-line and your representatives would debate what is funded and what is not.

This summer, lawmakers seemed hesitant to make these tough choices. In an agreement between Governor Pat Quinn and state lawmakers: legislatures passed a budget that gives Gov. Quinn the discretion to make those decisions.

This afternoon, the governor outlined his plans.

You can download/watch his address here.

You can find the video near the top of the page. You can also read and compare budgets from the last fiscal year.

Governor Quinn and his staff put together a power point presentation, explaining their choices here.

Thank you so much for following this story and please continue to follow it more. My husband is one of the many Correctional Officers that did receive a lay off notice on Friday July 31. I am having a really tough time with laying off any state employees for them to all draw unemployment that the state will still pay for. HOW IS THIS BALANCING OUR BUDGET!!! Not to mention the many families that need insurance. Now we will all have to sign our children up for medical cards, that the STATE PAYS for just so we can take them to the doctor. Again HOW DOES THIS BALANCE THE BUDGET? There are so many ways he could go about doing this better and be more efficient if he would listen more to THE PEOPLE OF IL. He got a raise this year and so did all of our senators and representatives and we have to loose our jobs.
Any of your help with this is GREATLY appreciated.
Thank you for your time.
