After A Close-Call, Family Takes to Streets with Message

8:16 PM Sun, Jul 05, 2009 |

Early Saturday morning, around 4 a.m., a couple woke up after hearing a loud bang. Aimee Brown and Shawn Long jumped out of bed to find a pickup truck crashed into their house and directly into their daughter's bedroom.

Their daughters weren't home, they were staying with other family over the weekend. However, this was a wake up call for the frazzled parents who couldn't help but wonder what could have happened...

Sunday, I headed for the home on the corner of Albers Lane and Walnut Ridge Drive in Bethalto to survey the damage. When I got there, I was greeted by about a dozen kids holding signs that read things like, "Honk if you're against drunk driving!" and "Do NOT drink and drive!"

Adults were there too holding signs and passing out Mothers Against Drunk Driving ribbons.

As family, friends, and neighbors got wind of what happened, they organized a small rally in front of the damaged house. Through phone calls, texts, and facebook messages, the group was fairly sizeable and definitely noticeable to cars zipping through the neighborhood.

The homeowners placed pictures of the three children that could have been hurt in the crash within view of passers by. They say they wanted everyone to understand what this family could have lost in the crash.
