No A/C? Cool Places You Can Go for Free

7:50 PM Fri, Jun 26, 2009 |

The Saint Louis County Health Department confirmed that two more people have died in this persistent hot weather.

A 75 year old Maplewood man was found dead in his home Thursday. The temperature inside was 96.4 degrees. A front room air conditioner was apparently not working.

A 62 year old Hillsdale women died in her home. Police found her Thursday evening. The home did not have air conditioning or fans.

If you find yourself stuck in temperatures above 95 degrees, head out to an air-conditioned building or room. Spend just a few hours a day cooling off. You have to get your body temperature down. If you're living without A/C for several days, the effects of the heat can build up in your body and cause problems for you later. So, a few hours in a cool mall, grocery store, or friend's home will help reduce the risk of a deadly heat stroke.

St Louis County is operating cooling shelters from 9am to 9pm at three locations:

St. Vincent Community Center at 7335 St. Charles Rock Road in St. Louis.
Queeny Park at 550 Weidman Road in Ballwin.
Kennedy Recreation Complex at 6050 Wells Road in Saint Louis.

You can find a list of more cooling centers here.

Or, call the United Way at 1-800-427-4626. I just called the number and it took just a few seconds to get through to someone who can help find a cooling center. Just press option #5 when you call.

The operator that answered tells me the informational line is answered 24 hours a day, even on the weekends.

If you know someone who may need help getting to a cooling station, get them this information.
