I talked to the lead investigator for the Major Case Squad at 9:45pm Tuesday. Major John Lakin tells me detectives have been following many good leads, interviewing people and conducting search warrants, but at this point they're not ready to make an arrest. Lt. Greg Jonas was shot in the back of the head at 2:30 this morning at the Ernest Smith Senior Apartments in Centreville. He was on patrol and stopped to check on some suspicious behavior when he was murdered. Obviously the Major Case Squad takes every case seriously, but Major Lakin volunteered that when a cop is killed they take it personally. Everyone on the case is emotionally invested. Dozens of detectives have been walking in and out of Illinois State Police Headquarters in Collinsville all day. As of 10pm, they're still coming in and out with food. Some of them are expected to work through the night. Meantime, at 8 o'clock tonight we went by the scene of the crime. It was a great evening weather-wise and dozens of kids were out running around. A few adults were active, too. They were adding to a memorial for Lt. Jonas. At the base of a pole there were about six stuffed animals... On the pole, a patriotic ribbon and red, white and blue hellium balloons. Lt. Jonas died in an area where many people knew him, respected him and loved him. There is little doubt the talented, dedicated detectives on the Major Case Squad will get Jonas's killer. |
